"Ballet is an art form built on discipline, precision, and beauty. For centuries, it has followed a set of unspoken rules that often go unquestioned in the name of tradition. But every time I take my place at the barre in the quiet before class begins, I see a body shaped by years of trying to fit into the expectations that ballet quietly demands. I wonder whether these physical standards are essential to its identity, or are they exclusions masked as elegance. This tension matters because, as dancers and educators, we have the power to determine which questions are being asked and challenged."

Our most popular online mini-course is back!
OPDI-M25: Hip-Hop: History and Heritage is a unique course featuring weekly Q&A Zoom discussions with Professor E. Moncell Durden.
As dance educators, we have a responsibility to give credit and respect to all forms by including context, heritage, and history in our lessons.
Understanding and sharing the rich cultural context and stories behind hip-hop dance can not only enhance your teaching, but also grow respect for the hip-hop genre and those who created it.
This online mini-course will help you understand hip-hop vocabulary, terminology, and fundamentals as well as gain a contextual and historical overview of hip-hop dance and culture; its recurring cultural modes of discourse and practices woven into black vernacular / social dance, and its intersecting economic, political, and social dynamics of race, gender, sexuality, and class.
