NDDC donates relief materials to Aiyetoro community; Executive Director hands them over
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has donated relief materials to Aiyetoro, a coastal community in Ondo State recently ravaged by ocean surges.
The relief materials were handed over by the Executive Director of Projects of the NDDC, Mr. Charles Ogunmola, who was accompanied by the NDDC Director of Ondo State Office, Mr. Olaniyi Salami, Director of Environmental Protection and Control, Engr. Obeka Onuoha, Director of Community and Rural Development, Mr. Gordon Okeya, at a ceremony at the Naval Base Igbokoda on Thursday.
Ogunmola said he received videos of the ocean surge that displaced over 200 households and destroyed properties worth millions of naira in the community and decided to send a team for an assessment. He said the team reported that the community needed urgent intervention and requested food and non-food items.
He said: "We are here to sympathize with you and to show you that the NDDC cares about your welfare and well-being. We have donated some palliatives made of food and non-food items to cushion the effect of the ocean surge on you. We have also brought some medical personnel to meet your health needs."
He added that the intervention was in phases and that the NDDC would also look into the possibility of completing the shore protection project awarded in 2006 but abandoned by the previous contractor. He said the project was meant to prevent further erosion and devastation by the ocean surge.
He said: "We are not here to make promises but to take action. We will do everything within our power to ensure that this project is completed and that your community is protected from future occurrences of ocean surges. We will also work with other relevant agencies and authorities to find a lasting solution to this problem."
He urged the community leaders and residents to cooperate with the NDDC and its contractors and ensure the project was executed without any hitch. He also advised them to take precautionary measures and avoid building too close to the shoreline.

NDDC Set to Unleash Game-Changing Partnership Initiative at PPP Summit 2023: “Rewind to Rebirth”
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has announced its plans to host a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Summit on April 25th, 2023, at the Eko Convention Centre, Eko Hotels & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
According to the Managing Director/CEO of the NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the summit, themed "Rewind to Rebirth," will launch the NDDC's new initiative for sustainable development in the region.
He revealed that the event will bring together stakeholders from various sectors and industries to explore opportunities for collaboration and investment in the Niger Delta.
In an invitation to the NDDC PPP Summit participants, Dr. Ogbuku disclosed, “The NDDC is a public sector organization established by an Act of Parliament in 2000 to address the developmental challenges of Nigeria's impoverished but hydrocarbon-rich Niger Delta region. The Commission has, since its inception, embarked on this mandate with some visible impact. Yet we still have much to do.”
The NDDC Managing Director said, “Inadequate funding ranks very high among the numerous challenges of the Commission. Against this backdrop, the current Governing Board and management decided to espouse the Public Private Partnership model to provide an alternative funding source for key development projects and programs. This initiative aligns with the NDDC mandate and the Sustainable Development Goals 17, which focuses on partnerships.”
He added: “We have carefully planned the NDDC-PPP summit as a strategic stakeholder meeting to launch our PPP initiative and communicate a new phase for the Commission. Furthermore, we intend to use the summit to create a gateway of opportunities for foreign and local investors, captains of industries, and multilateral agencies, among others, to join hands with the NDDC to build a new Niger Delta that is economically prosperous, socially stable, ecologically regenerative and politically peacefully.”
