Ask for it! Find reputable seafood mongers and restaurants that you can trust. Build a relationship with them and ask for suggestions of new fish and shellfish you may not have tried. You may just find a new favorite! Supporting local means eating seasonally and sustainably. Learning more about what North Carolina seafood is available and when makes you a more informed buyer. Meet Ryan, the Market Manager at Zora’s Seafood Market and Kitchen.. Ryan was recently promoted to the Market Manager after working as a Sous Chef at Seabird in Wilmington. Let him introduce you to the golden tilefish (pictured) or other delightful finfish to try. You deserve the best. Make it fresh, local NC Seafood every time! Insist on it! When you go to your favorite restaurant or seafood market, ask questions about where the seafood is from, who caught it, and when. These questions put them on notice that you care about your seafood being local and supporting the region. Restaurants and markets that indicate where the catch is from, often highlighting the geographic location and name of the fishermen on the menu are showing you they care too. If they can’t answer your questions, it is more than likely not local, and could be imported! By not ordering and spending your money with them, it sends a message too. You deserve the best. Oh what “A Night of Tradition and North Carolina Seafood” at Blackbeard’s Grill in Beaufort is in the books. It was the ultimate celebration of Real Local Seafood coming together to recognize the efforts of Commercial Fishermen, the Culinary magic by Chef Becky Rose, and of course the outstanding natural resources of North Carolina’s water. Guests and Fishermen mingled and enjoyed a bounty of a buffet - featuring oysters on the half shell, crab dip, fried shrimp, steamed shrimp, crab-stuffed flounder, fried flounder, steamed whole crabs, and sides of hushpuppies, slaw, sauteed green beans, corn, and potatoes. Delicious desserts include key lime pie, Down East lemon pie, and mini chocolate chip cannolis. Also featured was a shucking station of fresh “Marsh Hippie” oysters from Topsail Sound, harvested and shucked by The Oyster Girl, Morgan Kline. The theme of the evening - tradition and heritage of North Carolina’s commercial fishermen, who provide food for consumers, and the threat their industry is under. Continuing their way of life takes all North Carolinian’s fighting for their rights and access to fresh, flavorful, real, local North Carolina seafood. Because if the fishermen go away, the seafood markets, restaurants and YOUR access goes away too. The dinner was a fundraiser for NC Catch, whose mission is to educate the public about North Carolina seafood and the importance of small, commercial fishermen. Please help continue to support our cause through fundraising events like this one. For more information, please visit nccatch.org To learn about other upcoming events, follow us on Facebook and Instagram @NCCatch . Thank you again to Chef Becky Rose, the Rose Seafood family, the commercial fishermen who attended the dinner, and provided the catch, and to all the lovely folks who spent their evening with us support North Carolina seafood. Let's keep North Carolina seafood on your plate! Your seafood choices today decide the future of NC Seafood. @theoystergirlnc @blackbeards_grill @roseseafoodmarket Blackbeard’s Grill #nccatch #ncseafood #reallocalseafood
