Never Blend In: LGBTQIA+ Stories of Resilience and Empowerment LGBTQIA+ people have always shaped history, culture, and community—even when our stories were erased or silenced. Never Blend In is a powerful reminder that telling our truth isn’t just survival—it’s how we thrive. At a time when progress and backlash exist side by side, this book affirms a simple, lifesaving truth: you are enough. These stories transform pain into purpose, isolation into solidarity, and labels into self-definition. They honour the full complexity of who we are—across race, faith, disability, class, neurodivergence, and culture. This is more than a book. It’s recognition. Guidance. A call to action. A chorus of voices refusing erasure. Never Blend In isn’t just a slogan—it’s a survival strategy. #NeverBlendIn #LGBTQIA #QueerVoices #Resilience #Empowerment

Never Blend In Contributor Introduction: Lesléa Newman An award-winning author of more than ninety books, Lesléa has spent a lifetime telling stories that centre identity, love, loss, and the quiet courage of being fully oneself. From Heather Has Two Mommies to October Mourning: A Song for Matthew Shepard, her work has shaped generations—offering representation where once there was none. Lesléa’s journey is one many will recognise: growing up without language, without visible role models, and carrying the weight of feeling “other”. “I just thought there was something wrong with me.” And yet, from that place, Lesléa built something extraordinary—stories that say the opposite, again and again. “The common denominator is the message… you are okay. No matter who you are… you don’t have to change.” Her work is more than literature—it’s reassurance. It’s visibility. It’s belonging. In Never Blend In, Lesléa reminds us that sometimes the bravest thing we can do is tell the truth about who we are—and in doing so, make space for someone else to do the same. #NeverBlendIn #LGBTQBooks #AuthenticVoices #AffirmingLives #MeetTheContributors Follow @nbibook on IG to find out more 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

If this resonates, tell me why in the comments! Miserable children often become observant children. Observant children often become writers. #NeverBlendIn #AuthenticityMatters #RealNotPerfect #VoiceAndVisibility

Never Blend In Contributor Introduction: Brett Bigham Brett Bigham is an award-winning educator, LGBTQ+ advocate, and civil rights trailblazer whose courage transformed lives far beyond the classroom. The first special education teacher in Oregon to be named State Teacher of the Year, Brett became one of the few openly gay educators in the United States to receive such an honour. But his greatest legacy is not the awards—it is the young people who felt seen, safer, and more hopeful because he refused to be silenced. When ordered by his school district to hide his identity or lose his job, Brett chose principle over fear. What followed took him from the steps of the White House to international headlines, becoming a symbol of visibility, resistance, and the power of standing up for others. A lifelong champion for the underdog, Brett has dedicated his career to ensuring no child feels alone, invisible, or unworthy. His story is one of resilience, moral courage, and the life-changing impact of showing up exactly as you are. “I am an openly gay teacher, not to show straight people I am gay, but to show struggling LGBT youth they are not alone.” He sums up his legacy in one sentence: “I kept some kids alive.” Some young people will grow old because one adult chose truth over fear. #NeverBlendIn #LGBTQBooks #AuthenticVoices #AffirmingLives #MeetTheContributors Follow @nbibook to find out more 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Never Blend In Contributor Introduction: Jack Mackenroth Long before the world knew him from Project Runway, Jack Mackenroth was already building a life rooted in courage, creativity, and authenticity. Teased in his youth for being “different,” Jack channelled pain into purpose—teaching himself to sew at just 13 and transforming mockery into self-expression. From studying at University of California, Berkeley and Parsons School of Design to launching his own menswear store in New York, Jack forged an acclaimed fashion career with brands including Tommy Hilfiger and Levi Strauss & Co.. But his legacy reaches far beyond fashion. As an openly HIV+ public figure, Jack used visibility to challenge stigma, inspire hope, and show others that thriving openly was possible. His activism, compassion, and fearless honesty have touched lives around the world. “If young people see LGBT adults living happy, successful lives, then they have hope — and that is extremely powerful.” — Jack Mackenroth Jack’s story reminds us that shame is often taught—but it can also be unlearned. Through resilience, truth, and self-belief, he became living proof that no one else gets to define your worth. #NeverBlendIn #LGBTQBooks #AuthenticVoices #AffirmingLives #MeetTheContributors Follow @nbibook to find out more 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Never Blend In Contributor Introduction: Alex Randolph Alex Randolph describes himself as an Obama Alum and a recovering former elected official. His journey into public service began in San Francisco, working for Mayor Gavin Newsom and later the Board of Supervisors. Those early experiences revealed a simple truth: public service is eye-opening — you see how government works, and how it sometimes doesn’t. Raised in Germany with a global perspective on politics and human rights, Alex developed an early awareness of how systems can either protect people or erase them. That understanding became the driving force behind his commitment to equity. As a gay man and a man of colour, Alex believes public institutions must reflect the communities they serve. During his time in the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services, he helped residents navigate bureaucracy, ensuring communities had real human points of contact inside City Hall. Working in San Francisco during the marriage-equality era reinforced his belief that representation and visibility matter. Yet he also witnessed how rigid systems can fail those most in need — lessons that continue to shape his approach to leadership today. For Alex, the mission remains clear: Visibility is not just about being seen. It is about making sure others cannot be unseen. #NeverBlendIn #LGBTQBooks #AuthenticVoices #AffirmingLives #MeetTheContributors Follow @nbibook to find out more 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ Find out EVEN more about Never Blend In here: /neverblendin 📸 Steve Ferrario

Never Blend In Contributor Introduction: Kaig Lightner   Kaig Lightner introduces himself through labels — and then immediately pushes beyond them.   “I am a white, queer, transgender man. Well, at least that’s the labels that we have available to describe such things as race, sexuality and gender, but beyond those labels I am someone who is passionate about being an influential person to youth of all ages through coaching soccer, mentorship and community. I am also passionate about using my own lived experience of being transgender to educate others about how harmful and unnecessary the gender binary is in our society. I am the founder and former executive director of Portland Community Football Club, which offers high quality, affordable soccer to all youth in the Portland, Oregon metro area. I am also the founder of Quantum Gender Consulting, which provides education and training to professional institutions to improve the inclusivity of people of all genders in the workplace and on the sports field.”   But this potted biography is just the essence of someone who is all too aware that our stories, beyond but inclusive of those labels, matter: “Someone’s personal story means everything. It determines who they are, how they make decisions and how they contribute to our society.” #NeverBlendIn #LGBTQBooks #AuthenticVoices #AffirmingLives #MeetTheContributors Follow @nbibook to find out more 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Never Blend In by David E. Hull-Watters Foreword - Alex Iantaffi Ph.D #NeverBlendIn #LGBTQIA #QueerVoices #Resilience #Empowerment Never Blend In is an unapologetically bold and accessible collection of candid stories and wise words, created to encourage, inspire, uplift, and offer hope to those who need it most: anyone who has ever questioned their worth or felt alone. Blending memoir, personal storytelling, gentle self-development, and social insight, the book explores identity, shame, resilience, visibility, and what it truly means to belong. Through profoundly personal stories from artists, activists, educators, spiritual leaders, and cultural changemakers, Never Blend In offers reflections that help readers make sense of their own journeys. It explores how our sense of “truth” is shaped by relationships, environments, and lived experience—and how we can begin to reframe our narratives, strengthen self-esteem, and move forward with clarity, purpose, and self-compassion. The result is a book that feels both comforting and quietly empowering. Across the globe, LGBTQIA+ people continue to resist systems that were never built for them to thrive. In a world where some nations celebrate Pride through progress and visibility, while others continue to criminalise identity, Never Blend In holds space for both realities—honouring joy and resistance, side by side.
