The Book Nook Site Visit series has wrapped, and what the team brought back is hard to put into a single post.
Across the region, local coordinators and volunteers are doing the kind of work that doesn’t always make headlines but shapes communities in ways that last. Visiting the local government units that make it possible was just as important as visiting the nooks themselves. Our gratitude goes to Mayor Jerold B. Peña (San Jose), Mayor Raquel S. Lim (Goa), Vice Mayor Marcel Michael P. Pan (Goa), Mayor Manuel A. Ibasco Jr. (Bula), Mayor Niño A. Tayco (Pasacao), Mayor Ma. Leonor G. Robredo (Naga City), and Mayor Jesciel Richard G. Salceda (Polangui) for championing these spaces in their communities!
Reading culture doesn’t build itself. In Bicol, at least, it has the right people behind it!

NBDB Executive Director Charisse Aquino-Tugade, along with Director Ma. Carolina Tapia, Industry Development Division Chief Charmaine Capuchino, and Readership Development Division Head Daniel Mariano, sat down with The Asia Foundation (@theasiafoundation ) Philippines representatives Sam Chittick (Country Representative), Myn Garcia (Deputy Country Representative), and Marion Joseph Villar (Program Officer for Education Governance) yesterday for a conversation that covered serious ground: Filipino content development and distribution, and the promotion of a reading culture.
These aren't small topics. TAF's interest in all of them—and their willingness to sit down and think through what genuine collaboration looks like—signals the kind of partnership that could move things in a meaningful direction for Filipino books and the readers they reach. The details will follow. For now, yesterday’s conversation was exactly the right place to start!

The Naga leg of the Book Nook Site Visit closed at The Book Nook Community Learning Hub in Brgy. Sabang, where the active partnership between the hub and the UP Alumni Association Camarines Sur showed what community-led education in action looks like when it actually works.
The team was welcomed by site coordinator Nona Toledo-Savilla, site custodian Erika Mae Banaay, Sabang Elementary School Principal Nancy Sibayan, and UPAA Camarines Sur President Judge Ma. Luzy Torres Clasio. The evening ended with a visit to the Khaldoni Satellite Book Nook, owned by Mr. Khaled Mariscal—a fitting reminder of how far the reach of these local literacy spaces can extend.
Dios mabalos, Naga!

Serving the largest barangay in Naga, The Book Nook at Concepcion Pequeña High School has quietly built its presence in the community—and the visit only made clear how much further it can go.
Site coordinator Ms. Merly Dela Cruz guided the team as they presented the initiative to Principal Erwin De Los Reyes and DepEd Naga’s Education Program Supervisor Cesar Arriola, both eager to collaborate on the nook’s next chapter: integrating library systems, strengthening outreach, and deepening its roots in the Concepcion Pequeña community.
How can we build a community that could become a pillar of advocacy, connection, and the reading culture? 🤝☀️📖

Day 4 brought one of the visit’s most memorable stops: a meeting with Naga City Mayor Hon. Ma. Leonor “Leni” G. Robredo, who affirmed her support for The Book Nook Project and offered a reminder worth carrying forward—that the real measure of success isn’t in the data, but in what these spaces leave behind in communities.
The team then headed to the Raul S. Roco Library, where NBDB’s programs were presented to Education Scholarship and Sports Office Coordinator Pipin Aguilar, with site coordinators Ms. Merly Dela Cruz (The Book Nook Naga) and Nona Toledo-Savilla (The Book Nook Community Learning Hub, Brgy. Sabang) making the visit possible. With two nooks now active in Naga, the groundwork for a deeper partnership with the local government is already being laid!
