NBC 5 Investigates has received video of African American students at a South Side high school performing a re-enactment of a slave auction.
The performance was part of a Black History Month celebration at Carver Military Academy on the Far South Side back in February 2025. Teachers said they brought their complaints to the school’s principal and CPS administrators, but they fell on deaf ears.
The play was called "Journey Back to America,” depicting slavery and the African American experience. But one scene in the play depicts students taking part in a mock slave auction – with students in the audience bidding.
“The students were divvied up and Hispanic, Latino students were utilized as slave auctioneers and purchasers and Black students were utilized...slaves and so that seemed intentional that the Latino students were the auctioneers and the Black students were slaves,” said a longtime Carver teacher who witnessed the performance and brought a complaint to the principal and CPS administrators.

Nearly 4,000 of Waymo's autonomous taxis were recalled after the company's software may have allowed the vehicles to drive into flooded roads, according to a letter from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration obtained by NBC Chicago.
Both the fifth and sixth generation Waymo models were subject to the recall, according to NHTSA. A total of 3,791 of the autonomous taxis were recalled.
The recall was issued after a Waymo in San Antonio entered a flooded lane during extreme weather. The vehicle was empty at the time, however, the incident led Waymo to review their technology, specifically in scenarios involving both high-speed areas and flooded roadways.

Dark smoke and flames could be seen on the roof of a building in Chicago as firefighters battled a heavy blaze Friday, video showed.
Around noon, large plume of dark smoke could be seen rising from what appeared to be a residential building near South Rockwell and West 46th Street in Chicago's Brighton Park neighborhood, video posted to social media showed.
Shattering glass could be heard in the video as firefighters used a ladder and hoses to spray the fire.
No one was injured in the fire, Chicago Fire Department said.
The blaze was put out around 1 p.m., CFD said.

The beloved owner of the iconic Billy Goat Tavern, Sam Sianis, has died, according to a social media post from the restaurant on Friday.
"Sam was more than a restaurateur; he was a Chicago legend. His tireless work ethic, devotion to his beloved Tavern, and deep love for this city made him a cultural icon and an inspiration to all who knew him. Above all, he was a devoted family man and a cherished friend to countless people whose lives he touched," the restaurant said. 'Loved by many, he will be deeply missed. May his memory be eternal."

BREAKING: Aurora police urged residents to avoid part of the Chicago suburb, with potential restrictions in place, amid an investigation into a shooting in the area Friday.
Just before 10 a.m., Aurora police said they were investigating a shooting in the 2000 block of West Downer Place.
Residents and travelers were told to avoid the area and "seek alternate routes if possible."
As of 11:30 a.m., the department said it remained at the scene investigating.
"Preliminary information indicates this was an isolated incident involving individuals known to one another, and there is no known threat to the general public at this time," the department said in an updated release. "Residents are still encouraged to avoid the immediate area while the investigation continues."
Further details on the shooting were not immediately released.
