Answers to some questions I’ve been asked recently:
Yes, 13 years is considered old for cats—they are considered seniors at 9 human years, when their age exponentially begins to advance at a faster rate. Most OSCC cases are confirmed at 13, and the disease is quite aggressive with an average prognosis of only about 1-6 months from discovery. Squamous Cell Carcinoma is also more common in cats with white fur.
No, there are no surgeons who would’ve removed the lump as surgery under the tongue is quite complex and Eggs also had a heart murmur. A biopsy alone was $900, and nothing would’ve been able to save her; palliative care to make her departure comfortable was the only option, and those are the steps I began taking.
Yes, she was on an appetite stimulant and I also began to use holistic methods combined with fresh food I cooked then blended up for her until she stopped eating. I do believe these extended her time here.
No, I did not want to put her down—it was the most humane option considering her health decline and refusal to eat at all (likely due to the lump obstructing her throat). It was the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make, and it was rough seeing her condition worsen everyday. I wouldn’t wish that pain on anyone.
Yes, I am still in the grieving process, though I believe I began grieving at the end of January when we first discovered the lump and I was in denial… hoping it wasn’t what they assumed. All of her symptoms aligned with OSCC. Cats also hide their pain, and I think my girl was putting on her strongest face for me. I am so blessed to have been her mama and I’ll continue to cherish the memories, photos, and every moment up until her last breath. I loved Eggs and she loved me back; the best love I’ve ever received. The sweetest most loving cat I’ve ever encountered! If you’ve been fortunate enough to share space with her, you’d know. I am so blessed that she chose me and I loved being her Mama and I’m forever changed without her. I’ll continue to honor her for the rest of my life, and I cannot be more thankful for my community in lending support + love during such a difficult time. LONG LIVE EGGS! 🍳
