This is not necessarily to promote planting non-native cacti in your garden vs native cacti, but to highlight that Diadasia will go for other cacti flowers when native ones are unavailable. They also like Globe Mallow, but have to compete with feral European honeybees for these flowers, so shy away from them in my garden. It's important to also build habitat for our native bees. Diadasia, for example, like to burrow and build homes in sand or dry soil.

Always very showy in the spring, these tiny yellow, orange, and red flowers are always one of my favorites!
You’ll notice that down the stem the colors of the flowers change, and that could be due to pollination or the age of the flower. 💛🧡❤️♥️
Make sure to look for it on your next walk, and if you want to learn more about the native plants and animals in San Diego visit the Mission Trails Regional Park visitor center for free guided nature walks on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays beginning at 9:30 AM.
