Curatorial statement:
When Zach and Behida approached me about organizing a show my first thought was my community. I reached out to my friends and family, the artists that make up my orbit. The artists in this show are working artists, everyday they get up in the morning and plan their day with making in mind. Some of these artists I’ve known for over 35 years. Some of the artists are just beginning their career, like my daughter Violet and her classmate Kat, others have been making art for over 60 years! The criteria was simple, select artists whose work I love and respect and whose practice is like mine, they have no choice but to create. There was no theme to this exhibition, no overriding message but merley a collection of things that represent their ideas, styles and approaches. The age range is from 22 to 82 years old. This exhibition represents relationships, our bond as makers is the foundation that is the true definition of an artists community.

“Meade’s painting surfaces show many layers of building up and accumulating paint. This process of accumulation and layering helps me to feel as if I am watching Meade create the scenes on the surface. Building the characters from them. The colors glow and interact, especially places where light should be; for example, a household ceiling light, or sunlight cast upon the front of the porch. Meade's use of cast shadows also pulls you in; noticing shadows on legs or illuminating parts of the figure, which also casts a warmth over them. With this placement of the sun and light in the compositions and the building up the surfaces, Meade helps me feel the sense of passing time. The undeniable progression of life moving forward.”

Thank you to Mario Naves and The New York Sun (@thenewyorksun ) for this wonderful review of Nat Meade's solo exhibition, "Franklin"!
"Giotto haunts the canvases — Mr. Meade’s forms have a similar heft — as does antiquity, both in terms of its characters (a recurring Zeus-like figure) and theme (one picture echoes the fate of Prometheus). One would be ill advised, however, to mistake the artist for a classicist. As with most of us, Mr. Meade grew up in a pop-saturated environment and has pointed to the influence of 1970s television and film. Comics and outsider art were also vital resources in terms of his approach to anatomical stylization."
