National Service Dogs acknowledges that we are on the traditional lands of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Canada. From coast to coast to coast, Indigenous peoples have cared for this land since time immemorial.
We honour their history, cultures, and ongoing contributions, and commit ourselves to truth, reconciliation, and respectful relationships.
_____ NSD's main office is on land which is the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe, and Neutral people. We recognize our responsibility as settlers to honour the history and enduring presence of these Peoples and to commit to ongoing acts of reconciliation.

While his medical history precludes him from traditional service work, Ethan is currently training to become NSD’s next “Ambassador Dog,” succeeding the retiring NSD Chartwell.
Ethan’s journey and recovery is a testament to the dedication of his puppy raisers and the veterinary team that refused to give up on him. He stands today as a symbol of NSD’s unwavering commitment to the animals that will one day change the lives of Canadians across the country.
From the bottom of our hearts: thank you to our community.
Your kindness created a miracle we’ll never forget. Here’s to healing, to community, and to the incredible things we can do together.

The Miracle
On December 4, 2025, a dedicated veterinary team undertook the complicated procedure. They discovered the kidney was many times its normal size and very angry, but the surgery was a success.
We’ll never forget the relief, the tears, and the overwhelming gratitude we felt that day. Fast forward through the six weeks of rest and monitoring, and tests recently confirmed that Ethan’s remaining kidney has returned to normal functionality.

The Turning Point
There are no words to describe the heartache of looking at a beautiful little puppy full of promise and preparing for his end-of-life journey.
By the summer of 2025, Ethan was moved into hospice care to ensure his comfort during what was expected to be his final months. However, as news of Ethan’s condition spread, a "village" of veterinarians and specialists began to consult on his case. After additional diagnostics and a CT scan, a challenging, life-saving decision was made: Ethan would undergo surgery to remove the abnormal kidney and assess the viability of the remaining kidney.

The Scare:
When a litter of yellow Labrador puppies was born into our program on February 1, 2025, no one could have predicted the journey of heartache and hope that awaited one small pup named "Ethan". Today, we're sharing the story of resilience that defines our core mission: a commitment to the health and well-being of our dogs that transcends the standard "working dog" relationship.
At just four months old, "Ethan’s" puppy raisers noticed he was sweet and highly trainable, but struggled with incontinence. What was expected to be a simple bladder infection resulted in a devastating, potentially terminal diagnosis: defective kidneys.
Stay with us this week as we tell the story of a miracle made possible by our community.
