Elementary, my dear Watson. 🔍 • Happy Halloween from the world’s only consulting detective! Jeremy Brett really is the definitive Sherlock Holmes, and I say that as a long time fan of Basil Rathbone’s portrayal. But Brett brings something so special to the role through his humor and depth that no one else who has played Holmes has been able to do. I mean that first monologue in the first episode? Extraordinary. So these photos are Holmes, but specifically inspired by his Holmes<3 • { #sherlockholmes #jeremybrett #granadaholmes #halloween }

What a beautiful ending to an incredible night of Vincent Price on television which was programmed by @nativekidwithacamera and featured a wonderful Q&A with @imvictoriaprice , whose father is one of the things that sparked Gabz and I's friendship of some years now and has constantly been an inspiration to us and our futures in storytelling and preservation❤️💜💙 #vincentprice #ucla #billywildertheater

It’s finally here! This Saturday, September 27th at 7:30pm, I’m inviting you all to come out to the Billy Wilder Theater for a free screening I co-programmed with the UCLA Film & Television Archive, Beyond Terror: Vincent Price on Television! I will be giving a short intro and moderating the Q&A with Vincent’s daughter, @imvictoriaprice who will also be signing copies before the show of the biography she wrote about her father’s life. This whole event is inspired by a paper I wrote in grad school and it’s truly an honor to be able to collaborate with the Archive and bring a few of Vinnie’s TV appearances to the big screen, expanding beyond his legacy as a horror icon. For now, enjoy some of my favorite moments of Hans Conreid and Vincent Price being the most chaotic regulars on the Pantomime Quiz (So good it had to be two parts). No PQ in this Saturday’s program, but we will see Hans and Vinnie reunite! Hope to see you there! 📺✨

Baked a cake for the birthday boy 🎂 marking year five of the Vinnie birthday self-portrait tradition with a Price family recipe from A Treasury of Great Recipes (1965). This dark mocha cake is actually *chefs kiss* another year of celebrating a special person who embodied passion and joy. Happy Birthday, Vincent Leonard Price, Jr. ♡ • { #vincentprice #botd #portraitphotography #selfportrait #atreasuryofgreatrecipes }

and into the 27th year for á•alxevaš ✧ • I think this photo was from December. One of those things you take just to create and then file it away. that’s what a lot of the 26th year was. I hope to make more known in year 27th. the ideas that lay dormant for a myriad of reasons. as I say every year, always growing, always learning. stay tuned for more. ✧

Arrived in Palm Springs this evening to present tomorrow with @desertedfilmsps on Native American Home Movie Archives at the 2024 Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums Conference, so it’s only right to bring back sharing some of the Norte family home movies! It’s really a special moment for me to be able to speak about what these films mean to me and what I want others to learn. Enjoy this little clip reel and if you’re a #ATALM2024 attendee drop by at 1:45pm and see some more 🎞️🪶📽️ - Norte Family AV Archive • Super 8 • Silent • Circa 1970s • Inspected, prepared, and digitized by yours truly. - { #homemovies #archivist #avarchivist #indigenousfilm #filmarchive #amateurfilm #smallgaugefilm #avpreservation #archivalwork #filmpreservation #physicalmedia}

this is the universe… big, isn’t it? 🌹 • seeing my favorite movie on the big screen tonight and need to write a sappy little post about it. I watched A Matter of Life and Death for the first time on July 14th, 2020 and it not only made me fall in love with cinema again in a fundamentally different way that has changed the way I approach filmmaking, but introduced me to the world of film restoration and preservation. It led me to take a chance on grad school and apply. On March 22, 2022, I watched it again: on the day I found out I got into grad school at UCLA. And now, the summer after graduation I’m seeing it in a theater for the first time. You can’t help but appreciate the poetic cycle of that. the beaded medallion, in homage to the archers’ iconic logo and the films most striking motif, has hung next to my eagle feather for about four years now. they make an inextricable pair. When art moves us on a cosmic level, we must pay attention. In a little pink rose lies the universe. • { #amatteroflifeanddeath #thearchers #powellandpressburger #britishcinema }

returning some life back to a victim of Eastman fading 🎞️ • Over the last few years I have had a growing interest in representations of Native people that exist outside the commercial and independent narrative film spaces. These representational fragments often exist as home movies and educational/industrial films and are vital records of place and memory. I came across this 16mm film on eBay for practically nothing. After inspection, I found it was on two different stocks that were at different stages of fading and rapidly developing vinegar syndrome. It intrigued me to go search for any remnants of it on the internet. I found that it was a film produced by BFA Educational Films in 1971 as a part of their Discovering series that focused on music cultures around the world and was made to be screened in middle and high school classes. But the most interesting part was the composition piece by Quapaw/Cherokee composer Louis Ballard. There’s a lot to be said about this film and what it meant to say in 1971 and what it says today, but nevertheless it is worth considering. Film scanned by me as a 2K DPX, color corrected, and now uploaded to the Internet Archive to view. The link is in my bio! Stills of me working on this film by @matthewjohnbenton • { #filmpreservation #archivist #filmarchivist #movingimage #16mmfilm #educationalfilms #discoveringamericanindianmusic #indigenousfilm #70sfilms #colorcorrection #comparison }
