Fun fact. The Niisoo is 100% analog and requires calibration via two internal pots to dial in the “right” tone. Although there’s tools we can use to calibrate, we opt for our ears on this one just like Frybread and Commodity Fuzz.

I reversed a simply chord-progession (toggle-switch on the PK, which can also be mapped to an expression pedal!) here and gave it a slight high-cut 👌🏻

Come join us for the Rezisting Borderlands Symposium hosted by UCLA’s Cotsen Institute of Archaeology on Thursday May 28th in Fowler Building Room A222. This all day program will center the Native American alternative music community and how sounds and music are sites of resistance, history, and storytelling.
Join us for a morning session with Gregg Deal (Pyramid Lake Paiute), the multidisciplinary artist and front man of the Dead Pioneers, a punk band engaged in Native activism who will be in conversation with founder of Native Audio Mike Trombley (Blackfeet Nation), an engineer and musician influenced by his upbringing in Montana who designs Native inspired guitar pedals. This conversation will be facilitated by Jason De Leon, Director of the UCLA Cotsen Institute of Archaeology.
During the lunch break, there will be a guitar pedal demo organized by Native Audio founder Mike Trombley. Participants will be able to try out a variety of boutique guitar pedals inspired by Native American culture and history. These pedals will be available for purchase. (Feel free to bring your guitars for demoing!)
Our afternoon session is a panel with Dr. Viki Eagle (Sicangu Lakota) and UCLA PhD Candidate Kristen Martinez (Texas Band of Yaqui) discussing Rez Metal music and the Indigenous Punx Archives. They will be in conversation with Arizona Rez Metal bands Ocean Harvest and Six Million Dead.
Rez Metal is Native American Heavy Metal music originating from the Navajo Nation and greater Southwest four corners including Pueblo, Apache, and O'odham Tribal Nations. "Rez" is a slang term referring to Native American Reservation communities in North America. The sound of Rez Metal is often described as fast, distorted, raw, and gritty music influenced by various Heavy Metal genres ranging including Black Metal, Death Metal, Thrash, and Hard Core with a distinct Native American feel and aesthetic.
Following the panels, there will be a reception from 3-5pm followed by a Rez Metal Pop Up Show at Fowler amphitheater from 5pm-8pm.

Life can be a wild thing, and this weekend, it came full circle in a way.
I bought a ’68 Princeton reissue back in 2019. Days later, that same amp was gone when I was hit by a reckless driver going 70+ mph. The amp was completely crushed to pieces, never to be played again.
Years later. After all the speech, occupational, and physical therapies, the patience of waiting, and being able to get myself back up to speed on my physical and mental capacities. Years later, I finally did it.
I have a ‘68 reissue back in my hands. It was a birthday present to myself this weekend. I know it might not seem much to many, but this amp holds a special place in my memories.
It kind of feels like I’m back to “normal”. I know my brain will never be the same, and that I still battle my brain getting cooked on things, conversations, and other tasks. But, man. Life is short, and it’s always nice to look at the victories we make. This being one.
A big thank you to @micah_kemplin for making this happen and, more importantly, all of my friends and family for lifting me up out of a wild place that I never asked to be in. My heart is happy today ☀️
