My name is Mikey Mayes. I'm an artist, comedian, dork, and owner of Native Sun Gallery.
I turned my art into a legitimate business. We got a long way to go before we get super mega disgustingly rich, and start bathing in champagne but thats ok. I own a business. Like we're in the year of our Lord 2026 and I'm a business owner. A black business owner.
The truth is this shit is difficult, tedious, and often times redundant; but I've learned that if you're serious about your shit, and people see that you're serious they'll help you along the way.
Recently I graduated into the ranks of the Ujima Collective. A program headed by Neema Pickett, designed to provide black and brown businesses the tools and resources they need to succeed.
I wanted to quit every week.
I love learning. I hate school. Can't stand it. But I'm also not so proud that I couldn't recognize that this is something bigger than me. Plus how stupid would I look asking God for help then rejecting it because it wasn't the way I wanted it?
S/O to the Ujima Collective. We did that! And thank you to everyone who took the time to share their knowledge and insight with us. And thank you to everyone who's ever stopped by to say what's up, or buy a hoodie, or a hat, or a shirt, or a print, or even just took the time to look at my art.
If I'm lucky. One day I'll have a wife I can be proud of, and children that believe they can be anything they wanna be in this world. And because it's me they most likely will be whoever they want, and do whatever they want in the comfort of the castle we're currently building.
There's till an insane amount of work to do, but at least now we get to play on our terms, and we're gonna get it done. This was an awesome moment, and I just wanted to take the time to acknowledge it, and be proud for a sec.

Tonight - Feb 19th: Albuquerque Museum Third Thursday!!! Join us for a celebration of the 2nd graduating cohort of the Ujima Collective Work and Responsibility Business Development Program presented by @cabq_oei . Music and festivities begin at 5PM until 8PM.
I am honored to be part of this celebration and we all should show support during #BlackHistoryMonth
This is a free show and open to the public - Keynote Speaker - Professor Deleo A. Alford plus artists, performers and interactive activities throughout the museum.
Music will be provided by yours truly: DJ RyanDemond. A diasporic journey through African, HipHop, Funk, Jazz and more will fill the room.

The irony is that any coach will tell you that Heart and Hustle are two things you can't teach. BUT you can lead by example, so it was awesome to see so many beautiful and talented people in the same room doing their thing.
We've been chipping away at owning a business for years now, and every day we grow just a little more and add another brick to the castle. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth and showed love and voted for us to win first place!
And a special shout out to @count_supreme and @savage_beauty_productions for holding it down for the comedians (even tho they didn't send the pics over yet) and @treyvision for allowing me to present the award. Props to both men and congrats to Victor on the W!

Since we did not have our July show, we decided to choose a HeART and Hustler outside of the theater that exemplifies the HeART and Hustle in extraordinary ways. This was none other than former competitor @mupnasty with @native_sun_gallery ❤️🔥
On July 20, Mikey had an art exhibition called “The Traditional American.” It featured dynamic portraits of historical figures of the movement and the culture, colorfully animated paintings that shed light on dark American truths, and fantastic art you can just vibe with. This is the art to take home on shirts, hats, hoodies, comic books, prints and more. Creativity is the rooted in the HeART, but showcase is rooted in the Hustle- so for that we thank you Mikey and Native Sun for sharing your artistry with us all. We look forward to you in the Grand HeART and Hustle ❤️🔥

In honor of Free Comic Book Day, I'm stoked to announce that you can catch us in Artist's Alley at this year's Duke City Comic Con.
I battle by being better than I was yesterday. Even if it's rough. (And holymotherfuckdammitwhyfuckinwhymotherfucker has it been rough).
But I wake up with 3 choices EVERY DAY.
Cry about it, or CREATE.
Push the red button, or CREATE.
Close my eyes and let go of the wheel, or CREATE.
You're looking at a piece that took over 8 hours from pencils to inks to colors. Whether it gets 1 like or 1 million likes, it STILL TOOK 8 HOURS OF LIFE. And now it exists in this world.
A.I. will never know what that feels like.
But more on that later..
