Today is #pubday for CROOKED, my book about bringing a shamelessly corrupt politician to justice. No relevance to current events—none at all.

Today I explored Surfridge, a ghost town on the edge of LAX, with friend and planning historian @mdrakereitan . Developed in the 1920s, the oceanfront communtity fell victim to the Jet Age in the 1960s, when bigger planes like the 747 arrived and an expanding airport seized the land through eminent domain. #lostla 📸 by @mattbass

Honored to visit the remains of the Mother Hass Tree (1926-2002), the progenitor of pretty much every #avocado you've eaten on toast or in a bowl of guacamole. I'm here with avocado grower and nurseryman Rob Brokaw, whose great-uncle partnered with Rudolph Hass to propagate the Hass variety. Rob is the devoted custodian of this tree that revolutionized our diet. #lostla 📸: @mattbass

True Crime is hardly a recent obsession. Back in the 1950s, Californians were captivated by the death of a wealthy widow in Burbank, and the trio of suspects charged with the crime. Barbara Graham’s arrest was of particular interest. The novelty of a woman on trial resulted in hundreds of spectators, creating lines out the door of the Los Angeles Superior Court. Lost LA host @nathanmasters discussed the case with @thatmarciaclark , who recently published a book on the case. See more of their conversation on Lost LA at the link in our bio or on the free PBS app.

Who else remembers Thomas guides? As a self-confessed map nerd, I was delighted to chat about the history of Southern California's beloved (and still in print!) street atlas with @lapubliclibrary map librarian Peter Hague. #lostla

What an honor to visit the Parent Navel Orange Tree with its caretaker, Georgios Vidalakis of @ucriversideofficial . This tree came to Riverside in the 1870s and changed Southern California forever. If you've ever had a Washington navel orange, it probably came from a tree descended from this one, or its long-lost sibling. I can also tell you that, more than 150 years later, the original tree's fruit is still delicious! #lostla

Did you know the @californiabotanicgarden in #Claremont has over 1.25 million herbarium specimens? These preserved #plant specimens date back centuries and provide an accounting of the flora that have populated the area, both indigenous and invasive. Learn more about how Southern California came to have the lush and colorful landscape we all know and love—watch Lost LA on PBS SoCal or at the link in bio.

What a treat for this Bosch fan to hang out with the author who created Harry Bosch and the artist who brought him to life on the screen! It was a lovely evening yesterday at the @usclibraries Scripter Awards, celebrating the art of adaptation. The writers behind "One Battle After Another" and "Death by Lightning" took home awards, and Michael Connelly accepted the Literary Achievement Award.

For decades, Los Angeles has been the backdrop for movies and TV shows. While the city looks beautiful on big screens and small, if you live in SoCal there’s unrealistic one major part of its depiction that likely has you rolling your eyes ... namely, how people get from one place to the next. Bosch creator, writer and executive producer @michaelconnellybooks chatted with @nathanmasters about the importance of “Geographic Integrity” in his stories. To learn more about the roots of Los Angeles’ true crime legacy watch Lost LA on YouTube (at the link in our bio) or the PBS app. (Additional Material via AMC)

Happy Early Anniversary to the internet! On October 29, 1969 at 10:30pm, a transmission made its way from UCLA to the Stanford Research Institute. Lost LA host @nathanmasters visited Professor Leonard Kleinrock to see the room where it happened.
