This is a very small sketch I made of the old custom house on Broadway in downtown Nashville. For years it’s been used to house state offices and if you would go inside there are ridiculous drop ceilings and other modifications that hide the grandeur of its period finishes. At some point perhaps maybe it will sell and become a higher end hotel being in such a prime location.
It might have been 95° when I stood in the full sun to paint this little view. If you stand on that corner Broadway seems impossibly wide and busy, not friendly to a painting composition. I improvised the cars, something that still gives me a panicked feeling, just like those paintings in the market. That’s the way true location painting is, not feeling that your work is too “precious” to take risks in finishing. The beautiful old building with its clock tower wouldn’t have worked, for me, not without some indication of street level activity.
It’s really difficult to get into that spontaneous, daredevil place that can ( sometimes ) lead to a genuine “plein air” experience.

Thought I had this one sold a few times but it’s still with me. It’s the middle chapter of a three part journey from small plein air sketch to a big framed whopper of a painting.
