Birthed with support of the amazing midwifery practice @oulahealth - best experience ever.
When we returned, our phones blew up with dozens of caring messages from people checking in to see if we were OK.
We are more than OK. We are gloriously, fabulously alive, glowing with awe of human resilience.
If you live by clickbait, you got this version: “Thousands stranded,” “chaos,” “fiasco”—but the real story is that 75,000 people kept calm, collaborated and found joy in an unprecedented challenge. How sad is it when a remarkable true story about human perseverance sounds like an Onion headline?
We create the world we live in through the stories we tell. You can decide to find the cynicism and the negativity in anything, and you will live in that world.
But if you look into the eyes of those who were there, if you speak with them, you will discover another story.
The deep and juicy meaning of life comes into focus when we confront challenges with our fellow humans through creativity, adventure and play. So I’ll never forget the beautiful souls who carried us through the storm with their generosity of spirit.
The world was watching, and there were no riots, no fighting, and no cannibalism, only sharing, caring, learning, laughing, and dancing. 🔥 🕺🏼 ❤️
Today we cut the ribbon for a reimagined Big Button in the Garment District. Creative direction by me, with design by @thevikar and @clubduy , and fabrication by @uapcompany .
.
The Button and Needle debuted in 1996, designed by Jim Biber of Pentagram. In pre-smartphone days, people would come from all over the world in search of goods and services from New York's Fashion District. A real, live person inside a kiosk under the button presided over a physical directory of the neighborhood, and directed merchants and designers toward the ideal dealer of wool, spandex, or ... buttons.
.
Times changed and a physical directory was no longer necessary. The kiosk evolved from a public service to a public liability, and eventually began to collapse.
.
The Garment District Alliance asked us to reimagine what could go in its place. We considered many options, and concluded that to tear down the button would be to tear down a piece of history. We suggested an idea for giving the button a new life that could be an icon new generations.
.
Well…renovation is much harder than starting from scratch. The old kiosk crucially supported the massive weight of the button. But in New York City, anything is possible. In our new design, a magical thread pierces the fabric of the city, thus gaining the strength to support the boldest dreams. New York City has always been the place where impossible dreams come true—so who says we have to obey the laws of gravity?
.
The bright yellow button stands out from the towering skyscrapers that surround it. The color evokes New York's iconic taxicabs, but in fact is the same shade of the NQRW subway line—a nod to the old BMT line that brought garment district workers from Queens and Brooklyn, and today brings dreamers and doers from every industry to midtown.
.
As Boro Prez @marklevinenyc said, "Today is a great day for New York City."
