Step inside CASA BASSA, where a striking contrast between the dark, monolithic exterior and the bright, airy interior awaits. The open-plan space is flooded with natural light, thanks to expansive picture windows that frame stunning views of the North Downs. The loft-like volume creates a seamless connection to the landscape, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living. Simple, standalone volumes for the kitchen and storage—located on the upper level—help break down the space and add dynamic zoning, while the extensive use of timber and sustainable materials ties the design to its natural surroundings.

We’re pleased to share CASA BASSA, a compact new-build on the outskirts of Guildford, replacing a disused garage with a bold, multifunctional retreat.
Conceived as a hybrid guesthouse, studio, and teenage den, the project draws on the clients’ background in AI—binary patterns are translated into a rhythmic mix of zinc, charred timber, and porcelain tiles.
A sculptural green-tiled stair marks the entrance, leading into a bright, loft-like interior with framed views of the North Downs. Hidden within a dark, monolithic shell, the space offers a surprising contrast—light-filled, flexible, and deeply connected to its surroundings.
Sustainably built using reclaimed materials and high-performance insulation, CASA BASSA is small in scale but ambitious in intent.
