If you’re looking for a last minute gift, how about a book? As it turns out, I just happen to know six nice folks who had books come out this year! “Take Creek, For Example” by Chris Rugeley — I’ve known Chris since I was a kid in Colorado. He was one of the first people I knew who exuded a poet’s soul. I was so happy when I found out he wrote a novel. Kirkus Reviews calls it “an entertaining, unsettling exploration of the making of meaninglessness.” Give it a read! “Murder on Sex Island” by Jo Firestone — Jo is one of the most special people of all time. This book’s premise: “A sexy reality TV show with a missing contestant, a twisty psycho-sexual thriller with equal parts humor and intrigue.” Jo narrates the book herself for FREE via podcast!
“Naked in the Rideshare” by Rebecca Shaw and Ben Kronengold — debut humor collection from a lovely duo I worked with at The Tonight Show. Rebecca and Ben are very nice and they make comedy writing look easy. It’s annoying. My favorite piece: “My College Friend the Pope.” “The Men Can’t Be Saved” by Ben Purkert — Ben and I were in the same dorm and we had the same level of ironic-but-earnest desire to win intramural sports. I’ve admired Ben from afar as he became a wonderful poet and now an acclaimed novelist. This book is a hilarious and thoughtful look at the intersection of creativity, commerce, and copywriting. “When in Rome” by Liam Callanan — Liam is a faculty member at the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College, where I’m currently completing a low-residency MFA. I had the pleasure of hearing Liam read the first chapter out loud and, I promise you, if you finish the first chapter, you will be hooked. “The End of Drum-Time” by Hanna Pylväinen — Hanna is also a faculty member at Warren Wilson and I had the pleasure of hearing her read an excerpt that was, let’s just say, “steamy.” It’s a story of “forbidden love and fugitive faith set in the majestic expanse of northern Scandinavia in the 1850s.” Also, nbd, it’s a National Book Award Finalist. ps - I wonder if I’m the only person in the entire world who owns all six of these books?

Babies (plural). Welcome to the family, Juniper! It’s only been a few weeks, but I can tell I already like your style + love you unconditionally. I’m feeling grateful for all the family help we’ve gotten these last few weeks, thankful for our doula and the hospital staff for the care we received, and I’m once again in awe of my wife Miranda’s ability to create a new human life in her body and then bring it into the world. WOW! What a thing.
30 hours, ten runners, 200 miles — we ran from Mount Hood to the coast of Oregon! Thanks, @htcrelay . We had a nice time. Also, the van smelled totally fine by the end and the day after I’m not sore at all.
Twenty Year Reunion — new achievement unlocked! It was a wonderful and surreal joy to connect with some of my Evergreen High School classmates after two decades. Nourishing to reunite with so much Colorado gratitude. Thanks to everybody who made it and lots of love to those who couldn’t be there, too.
Happy birthday, Miranda! It’s fun to travel across the country for a weekend with you, which makes sense because it’s fun to do anything with you. You are my favorite and I love you.
Happy Mother’s Day, Miranda! Thanks for chasing rainbows, stomping in puddles, carrying ceramic coffee mugs on walks, and the other million things you do to be a super mom. We love you!
