Every spring in Denmark, 14-year-olds celebrate konfirmation - a coming-of-age tradition rooted in Lutheran Christianity, but today embraced by families of all backgrounds as a milestone worth marking. Think of it as a Danish quinceañera or a Bar Mitzvah - a day entirely devoted to one young person stepping into adulthood, surrounded by everyone who matters. There will be a long table, a lot of smørrebrød, at least three relatives giving the same speech, and a cake that took someone two days to make. And the teenager? Somewhere between genuinely moved and desperately trying to look cool in front of their friends. As a photographer, this day is a gift. Everyone is dressed up, emotions are running high, and at some point - usually during the toasts - someone cries. That’s when I know I’m exactly where I need to be. She showed up with the most incredible copper hair and immediately made it clear she was the one in charge here. Four years old. No notes. This was a first for me: a full family and maternity session conducted almost entirely in Danish. Did not see that coming. Jeg bruger ikke dansk i min hverdag😄😁 og det ikke nemt for mig at skifte fra engelsk til dansk i fotografi forløb. But i managed just fine. A little hyggelig chaos, a lot of laughter, and apparently my Danish holds up under pressure. Tak for tålmodigheden, venner. 🙏 This is a real home. Yours, beloved, carefully created space.
