In an interview for United Nations News, Nataliia Tomenko, youth advocate, expert on Romani history, and Deputy Director of the Agency for the Advocacy of Roma Culture, reflects on her grandmother’s Holocaust survival story and the role of young people in turning remembrance into action.
On Holocaust Remembrance Day (January 27), the UN in New York marked a historic first by hosting the testimony of a Ukrainian Roma during its annual commemoration.
Nataliia Tomenko presented a video account by her grandmother, Holocaust survivor Halyna Tomenko, honoring the experiences of Roma families persecuted across Eastern Europe.

27 січня 2026 року, під час Церемонії вшанування пам’яті жертв Голокосту в Організації Об’єднаних Націй в Нью-Йорці — уперше в історії прозвучало свідчення ромського пережившого нацистські переслідування з України.
Наталія Томенко виступила разом зі своєю бабусею — Галиною Томенко , представивши міжпоколіннєве свідчення ромських жінок — від виживання до відповідальності.
Їхні голоси поєднали минуле й теперішнє:
геноцид ромів під час Другої світової війни та війну, що знову триває сьогодні в Україні.
Історію витривалості, пам’яті та гідності, переданої від покоління до покоління.

On 27 January 2026, during the Holocaust Memorial Ceremony at the United Nations in New York, for the first time in history, testimony of a Roma survivor of Nazi persecution from Ukraine was heard.
Nataliia Tomenko spoke together with her grandmother, Halyna Tomenko, presenting an intergenerational Roma women’s testimony — from survival to responsibility.
Their voices connected past and present:
the Roma genocide during the Second World War and the war once again unfolding in Ukraine today.
A story of resilience, memory, and dignity carried from generation to generation.
🕯️ Memory is not only remembrance — it is protection, education, action, and responsibility for the future.
At the invitation of the United Nations, Nataliia Tomenko will address the international community, sharing her testimony alongside that of her grandmother Halyna Tomenko, a Roma survivor whose family endured persecution during the Second World War in Nazi-occupied Ukraine.
On 27 January 2026, the UN General Assembly Hall will host the official observance of the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, under the theme “Holocaust Remembrance for Dignity and Human Rights.”
Marking the 85th anniversary of the Babyn Yar massacre, this will be the first time a Roma survivor’s lived experience from Ukraine is formally presented at the UN Holocaust Memorial Ceremony.
The Holocaust Memorial Observance 2026 will be transmitted live on United Nations' YouTube channel.

2 серпня у Бабиному Яру відкрилась виставка «Невидимі. Стійкість: минуле і сучасність ромів» до Міжнародного дня пам’яті жертв геноциду ромів.
Для мене це був не просто професійний виклик, а момент глибокої особистої відповідальності. Я — третє покоління ромської родини, яка пережила геноцид під час Другої світової війни. Бути кураторкою цієї виставки означало для мене зібрати воєдино голоси минулого й сучасності, щоб вони пролунали гучно, впевнено і з правом на рівність.
