Posting this on main because I forget who I’ve told, but this is as far as I got for surgery today. After waiting in pre-op for a couple of hours, mine was cancelled, because there were people in more urgent need.
No new date yet, but there will be one, and until then I’ll continue to live in limbo and be grateful that the care we have access to here in Canada is compassionate and free, and this is a reminder to not take that for granted.

End of summer magic ✨
Big thanks to @sophieanneedwards for wrangling this incredible group, without which I wouldn’t have had a reason to visit Manitoulin Island for the first time. @ahfaulkner and I took the scenic route through North Bay and Sudbury and even that was real nice!
I turned 43 this year. My dear friend, writing mentor, and running pal Priscila Uppal, died way too soon at age 43, in 2018. I spent a lot of time in the first part of 2025 thinking about how lucky I am to still be here, and about all the things I wish Pris was still around to do… and then I started thinking about all the races I wished we’d run together. She’s the reason I started running back in 2011; she paid for my first 5K registration (but only after I actually finished the race).
So I decided to start running races again this year, after a 10-year hiatus. I found the KRRA Waterside Series and decided I was going to do the three races to get the medal at the end; this was my summer project. I can’t say enough good things about all of these races, which also raise funds for local organizations — every race was fun and so well organized.
I ran the Napanee Heritage 5K in 31:53, the Wolfe Island 5K in 33:43, and the Wooly Bully 10K in 1:04:38.
These are not fantastic times. They are times that reflect the work I was able to put in, starting from scratch, running three days a week around a demanding career and family commitments. I am more proud of these race results than I am of all the faster times I hit in my 20s and 30s.
When I’m running now, I try to focus on the scenery, the terrain of the course, the genuine marvel that is my physical body and how it does what I ask it to, the camaraderie of races. (I also sweat and swear and complain because balance.) But I’m trying to soak it all in because it’s just so beautiful, and I feel so damn lucky to be here at 43. I think of Priscila every time I put on my running shoes, and honestly, it’s a gift to get to feel close to someone you miss so regularly.
So here’s to doing things you never thought you’d do again and to toasting loved ones here and gone.
Not my usual medium, not my original drawing, but when I sat down to paint with Martha this afternoon, these poppies in my watercolour workbook felt right for today, thanks to @katecrothersdesign ’s prompt #imanartistandistandwithgaza
