April! SLC > MOAB > PDX > MN > MADEIRA. Staying near home for the next little while but that was pretty epic.

“There are years that ask questions and years that answer.” -Zora Neale Hurston Many of the races I’ve run over the last couple years left me disappointed, scratching my head, or just relieved to have bought myself a break. I haven’t felt like myself and couldn’t put a race together that I was satisfied with. It’s been a challenging couple years for us. Settling into life and training in Utah was harder than expected and Rachel’s residency is taxing for both of us. Day care sickness has rocked our home when we’ve normally experienced pretty good health. We navigated a very scary pregnancy. In the Grand Scheme of Things we’re so fortunate, but I do care about racing well. And there’s always the backdrop of getting older. When do you finally run your last best race? After Worlds last year I retooled my training and started to enjoy it again. It’s nothing too flashy but it works well for me and I like it. It may sound audacious at 42, but I think my best races are ahead of me. Madeira was a moment of catharsis, relief, celebration. Progress isn’t always visible. 📸: @mattcxr / @trail.passion

You wouldn’t believe the places this course goes. On Saturday I finished 3rd at @miutmadeira ! It was a mind melting experience racing across the island, wild and fun in ways I never expected but always hope for. Early in I found a steady and comfortable effort and worked my way up to the lead, working together with @rod.farvard , special miles in the middle of the night. My legs felt strong on climbs and sturdy on downhills and on the third big climb I went ahead on my own, keeping to my own process and trying as best I could to not get too excited about how the race was unfolding in my favor. Really, just having the time of my life. I thought I was a strong descender, but I got passed so quickly on the next descent by @vincentesmiol and @aurelien_dunand_pallaz and @gautierairiau were suddenly right behind me by the next aid station as I went through a low point. I’m so grateful to @emily_arrell / @precisionfandh for crewing me and confidently telling me my refreshed bottles should even out my electrolytes. I slipped from 1st to 4th, threw myself the inevitable pity party, then got back to focusing on the race ahead of me (not behind!) and minimized the damages as best I could. We traversed the most epic trails I’ve experienced in the early morning fog with mostly obscured views but the occasional peek at the cliffs all around and competitors in the distance. Unforgettable. With the remaining 20 miles either downhill or flat, I set out chasing and passed Aurelian, then shortly after took a dive on the trail and crushed my knee to the point of feeling sick to my stomach. I shook it off, it eventually numbed, and I pushed to get away from him, out of sight and out of mind. Then with 6 miles I saw Gautier in the distance and gave the best chase I could but he moved well and held me off to the finish. This goes down as one of my most cherished race experiences. I’m not sure I ever would’ve gone to Madeira if not for this race, but I’m so glad to have seen this place. It’s pretty far flung, but if you get the chance, go! 📸: @mattcxr / @trailpassion

It’s good to be home. Filled up my cup with some waterfalls and the community I’ve been missing and even some unexpected confidence from a 4th place finish in the 30k Gorge Waterfalls! I know I know, 4th place is a little off the podium, but there are layers to these things. Thanks to a few people who gave me knowing winks and said ‘I see you.’ Let’s go take this cup and pour it out in a couple weeks. It’s really cool to see what @daybreakracing @freetrail and @acg are creating here. What a way to celebrate the community and land we love so much. 📸: @runfreetrail

Man vs Machine out on the Moab Rim! And let me be frank with you: it wasn’t close. I think everyone in the course lapped the jeeps multiple times. Score one for cleaner air and all the dads out there contending with ‘monster trucks’ for their kids’ love! It was another memorable @runningupforair event and so fun playing on the slick rock all day, tastefully beating my legs up with Madeira a few weeks out. 📸: @shitinthewoods

@miutmadeira on the horizon and training is going! A couple pivots due to race cancellations (drug cartel leader killing and subsequent civil unrest, biting gnats hatching way too early due to March heat wave…the normal stuff). This race has been on my shortlist for so long and we narrowly missed an opportunity to race a couple years ago, but our travel plans are solid this time around so let’s give it another try! 📸: @shitinthewoods

We’ve already hit 80 degrees multiple times and it’s only March! Here’s a friendly reminder to pack your @hydrapak Filter Cap to avoid any uncomfortably thirsty runs. If you don’t have one yet, use the code DRINKUP for a lil discount and prep for the hot days ahead! 📸: @shitinthewoods #hydrapak

In a major pivot from our plans to race @puertovallartabyutmb , Rachel and I traveled a little north for the RUFA event on Malans Peak in Ogden (👋 @damianlillard 🤗). I’m feeling sufficiently tuckered after 9 laps, 10 hours, and 20k’, and the cup is full from sharing a couple of those laps with my lovely bride and hanging out with the community out on the trail.

Maybe not all, but quite a few conditions at the All Conditions Gear @acg Trail Summit! Palm Springs is a gem of a place to run in the winter, and it threw snow, wind, rain, and sunshine at us. I’m so excited to be starting my 8th (!?!) year as a Nike athlete and to see the energy building for trails and the outdoors. There’s cutting edge product coming down the line, of course, and while I might not be the biggest fan of orange, what I really love is the greater international flavor and overarching message that there’s fun stuff to do outside, so get out there. The more, the better! 📸: @shitinthewoods #acg #allconditionsracingdepartment #running #trailrunning #ultrarunning
