You wouldn’t believe the places this course goes.
On Saturday I finished 3rd at
@miutmadeira ! It was a mind melting experience racing across the island, wild and fun in ways I never expected but always hope for. Early in I found a steady and comfortable effort and worked my way up to the lead, working together with
@rod.farvard , special miles in the middle of the night. My legs felt strong on climbs and sturdy on downhills and on the third big climb I went ahead on my own, keeping to my own process and trying as best I could to not get too excited about how the race was unfolding in my favor. Really, just having the time of my life.
I thought I was a strong descender, but I got passed so quickly on the next descent by
@vincentesmiol and
@aurelien_dunand_pallaz and
@gautierairiau were suddenly right behind me by the next aid station as I went through a low point. I’m so grateful to
@emily_arrell /
@precisionfandh for crewing me and confidently telling me my refreshed bottles should even out my electrolytes. I slipped from 1st to 4th, threw myself the inevitable pity party, then got back to focusing on the race ahead of me (not behind!) and minimized the damages as best I could. We traversed the most epic trails I’ve experienced in the early morning fog with mostly obscured views but the occasional peek at the cliffs all around and competitors in the distance. Unforgettable.
With the remaining 20 miles either downhill or flat, I set out chasing and passed Aurelian, then shortly after took a dive on the trail and crushed my knee to the point of feeling sick to my stomach. I shook it off, it eventually numbed, and I pushed to get away from him, out of sight and out of mind. Then with 6 miles I saw Gautier in the distance and gave the best chase I could but he moved well and held me off to the finish.
This goes down as one of my most cherished race experiences. I’m not sure I ever would’ve gone to Madeira if not for this race, but I’m so glad to have seen this place. It’s pretty far flung, but if you get the chance, go!
