Fine-textured natural hair is rarely represented in the natural hair community, leading many to feel something is wrong with their hair.
Unlike the thick, full hair often seen in the media, fine natural hair can appear fragile, thin, and low in volume. It’s also more prone to breakage and frizz, making length retention challenging.
With limited guidance, it’s tough to know how to care for and style fine natural hair effectively.
I’m Hadassah Agbaps and I have fine-textured natural hair. I’ve successfully grown it long and healthy, and I’m here to share my journey!
For starters, here are some things to avoid if you have fine natural hair
❎Frequent Combing Over-combing can lead to breakage, particularly in fine hair. Limit combing to when necessary, ideally using a wide-tooth comb on damp hair to minimize damage.
❎Minibraids and Cornrows While these styles can offer protection, they may also create tension on fine hair, increasing the risk of breakage. If you choose to braid, ensure it’s done loosely to avoid stress on the roots.
❎Frequent Trimming While trimming is essential for healthy hair, excessive cutting can prevent length retention.
If you have fine natural hair with multiple textures, it is absolutely normal for your hair to look see through even if you don’t damage!
So don’t get over zealous!
Aim to trim only as needed, such as when split ends appear.
❎Heavy Extensions to Make Hair Look Fuller Using heavy extensions can put added stress on fine hair, leading to breakage. If you want to use extensions, choose lighter options and avoid styles that pull on your natural hair.
❎Neglecting the Ends of Your Hair The ends of your hair are the oldest and most vulnerable. Focus on regular conditioning and moisturizing to keep them healthy and prevent split ends.

Tired of your twists looking scalpy and stringy while everyone else is giving fullness and volume?
As a woman with fine textured natural hair, I’ve been there!
So SAVE these TIPS for your next twist day & tag a thin-haired natural queen 👑!
💕Use Smaller, Irregular Sections
Why: Larger sections with defined parts emphasize the scalp and make twists look stringy. Do this: Part your hair into medium or smaller sections with irregular parts for a fuller look.
💕Loosely Twist the Roots
Why: Tight roots = visible scalp. Loose roots give a fuller, softer appearance. Do this: Start your twist a little looser at the root before tightening as you go down.
💕Twist on Stretched or Textured Hair
Why: Twisting on blown-out or lightly stretched hair makes twists look fuller and longer. Do this: Blow-dry or stretch hair with braids/banding before styling.
💕Twist with soft hold gel
Why: Fine textured hair is light and easily gets frizzy or rough. Using a strong hold gel can weigh down fine strands and make the hair look thinner. Not using a gel at all can leave the new twists looking older and rougher.
Do this: Twist with either a curl activator or a twisting gel.
💕Add Marley or Kinky Hair (Optional but Magic)
Why: Adding a little textured hair gives instant volume while blending seamlessly. It also reduces frizziness by giving your hair a grip. Do this: Add a bit of Marley or kinky twist hair to each section before twisting.

Have you been struggling to grow your hair long?
Do you believe that YOUR Hair is not growing?
Let me tell you something.....it's a LIE!
Your HAIR IS GROWING!
Scientific fact: Hair ALWAYS grows!
If it didn't, you'd be completely bald by now!
The reason why it seems your hair is not growing .....is BREAKAGE!
You're doing the wrong things to your hair and causing breakage! Combing, using the wrong products, doing the wrong styles for your hair type leads to BREAKAGE!
If you grow out 1 inch and lose 1 inch to breakage, the total growth will be ZERO!
If your hair breaks faster than it grows, you will be stuck at the same length forever!
Don't waste your money on hair growth pills and oils! See, if you grow extra inches and lose them to breakage...your total growth is still ZERO!
So, how do you avoid breakage????
I have an E-book in which I shared the SECRETS to preventing breakage!
The link for the E-book is on my bio!
I've used these tips to grow my hair WAISTLENGTH even though my hair is fine textured, feather weight and easily breaks!
If I CAN, YOU CAN too!

The first question many people ask when they see long hair is, “What products are you using?”
It’s not the right question because even if you use the most expensive, “best” products ever… if your overall routine isn’t right, your hair still won’t grow.
Next question is ‘Are you fully Nigerian or are you mixed?’. This question is under the assumption that Nigerians can’t grow long hair. It’s a funny question in 2026 because there are lots of Nigerian women who have long hair…and they’re all over social media!
You don’t have to be mixed to grow your hair long!
The right question to ask is : ‘What’s your hair regimen like?’
Because honestly, having the right regimen is the easiest way to grow out your hair and the best regimen has this formula:
Less manipulation = less breakage = more length. Simple.
Long hair comes from the basics: gentle care, protecting your strands, and not a 10 hour washday routine, not 10,000 oil mixes, not a witch’s herbal brew of magical hair growth potion! Keep it simple!

Girl therapy.
I find calm in my simplified wash day routine.
I’m using ‘Dry Wash n Go’ technique for curl definition so I don’t go to bed with a wet head.
I’m rehydrating dry hair with the @afrobynatureng Hair Mist and defining the curls with the ‘Curl Maker’.
Then I’m sealing with a light coat of @afrobynatureng Hair Growth Oil.

I tried all the trends.
I bought all the products.
I followed almost every advice.
As a fine hair natural with thin breakage prone strands.
here’s what I’d never do!
❎ Cornrows - whether under wigs or as a hair style, I’d never do them because they aren’t the best protective style for my texture.
❎ Use soap based cleansers….black soap, castille soap ….anything soap will have no business near my hair. I don’t care if it’s natural. Point is, the pH of soap is too alkaline to wash hair with especially if you have fine breakage prone hair.
❎ Use raw shea butter directly on my hair. I tried it and over time, it made my hair feel dryer and lackluster.
I don’t mind it as an ingredient in products emulsified into a lotion but not in it’s raw form.
Why? Constantly loading up on hair butter acts as a seal that prevents water from escaping. It’s a double edged sword because if applied on dry hair, it also makes it difficult for the hair to absorb moisture. For high porosity and fine textured hair, dryness can lead to breakage which can prevent your hair from growing visibly longer.

People always ask me:
“Is your hair real?” and “Does long hair run in your family?” — especially here in Nigeria.
The truth is while genetics and environment play a role, I was not given the easiest hair type to work with.
My hair strands are fine and prone to breakage which means they’re naturally fragile. I also have a sensitive scalp and an inherited tendency toward hair loss, so I have to be very careful with the products I use.
On top of that, my hair is kinky‑curly which needs very specific care to stay moisturized and strong.
For years, I followed international natural hair advice but I quickly realized that not everything works for Nigerian hair types or in our hot, humid climate.
After a lot of experimenting, I finally discovered what actually works for my hair texture, scalp, and environment—and it made a huge difference in my hair growth and length retention.✅

Natural hair growth trends come and go over the years and somehow we’ve tried them ALL
From coconut oil to rosemary oil to no oil at all...
If you’ve been natural long enough, which one did I miss? #naturalhairgrowth #naturalhairjourney #curlyhair #kinkyhair #naturalhaircare
Yeah, I was SHOCKED too!
For context, I have fine-textured natural hair—basically, my strands are as thin as confetti and my hair has some fun features:
- It’s fragile, like my resolve around Haribos.
- Breakage? ✅
- Tangles? My hair and knots are BFFs.
- Shrinkage? Everyone thinks I just got a haircut when I go from curly to straight!
- Styles? Some seem to drain all the volume from my hair like a vampire.
Howeverrrrrr, natural hair has been my reality for the past 30 years, so I’ve done it all…. from the good to the “What was I thinking?”
As I got older, I care for my hair at home and rarely visited salons.
The upside? My hair grew longer and broke less.
The downside? Twisting or braiding myself turned into an all-day Netflix binge. And let’s be honest—working in healthcare doesn’t leave much time for self-care!
One day, I thought, “Let’s treat myself!”
I went to a salon for mini twists and a break while someone else styled my hair.
The stylist scrunched her nose and said, “Mini twists won’t work; they’ll look scanty.” I showed her my Insta to prove otherwise and she finally agreed.
But while twisting, she complained my hair was “like rubber,” too elastic, and always tangling. I thought, “Isn’t that the point of having kinky hair?” What coils is more elastic than what is straight 🤷♀️
She then grabbed scissors to cut the tangles! I was like, “Hold up! If that’s the plan, I might as well start rocking a buzz cut!”
She eventually declared my hair “too difficult to style.”
For those who said Hadassah’s hair is soft and easy…shebi you have heard her?!
I was expecting a post-Covid natural hair stylist to be more experienced with kinky hair…chai.
Ever had a similar experience at a natural hair salon? Do you know a good one in Lagos?
