“Some dots resemble pairs of eyes; others appear as overlapping roundish figures. But when viewed as the 78-year-old artist intends—through a phone camera—the forms appear to jitter like static.” Shanti Escalante de Mattei @sed_paz on Nancy Burson’s @nancyburson Quantum Entanglement Paintings, currently on view at Heft. Read the @ARTnews profile on Burson’s origin as a pioneer of photographic composites, her collaboration with MIT’s Media Lab, work with the FBI, and journey into mysticism and science - all leading to Light Matter - at the link in bio. Visit 300 Broome to view her current exhibition of new paintings and video works at Heft before the show closes this Saturday, May 2.

Besides my interactive paintings that change colors when filmed, I’m also presenting experiential performances with glow-in-the-dark statues I use as tools for audiences to see and record the movement of particle physics around them. It’s an out-of-this-world trip that takes 10 minutes in the dark. @heft_gallery through May 2nd. Sign up at the link in my bio or on my website. “I was naive about what it would become.” Nancy Burson on developing facial morphing technology decades before AI. I spoke with her about identity, synthetic images, and her current work exploring light, perception, and quantum entanglement. My first piece for @rightclicksave - and the start of a new chapter. Link in bio. Thanks to @nancyburson @right_clicksave @heft_gallery

We were pleased to produce two prints for Nancy Burson’s exhibition Light Matter at Heft Gallery, including Big Brother and Androgyny. The works originate from Burson’s seminal composite portrait series from the 1980s, created using facial morphing and recognition technologies she pioneered. Developed in collaboration with researchers at the MIT Media Lab, these images are among the earliest digitally generated composite portraits and laid the groundwork for technologies that now inform AI-driven facial recognition and image filtering. These composite portraits combine multiple source images into single faces, reflecting Burson’s long-standing investigation into how identity can be constructed and perceived through technology. Light Matter expands on this vision across four bodies of work, including Quantum Entanglement Paintings, Quantum Observation Videos, a selection of her composite portraits, and ongoing performances of Mary and the Quantum Spheres, all exploring the idea of a shared human essence. There’s still spaces left to experience one of Mary and the Quantum Spheres performances of live particle physics you can record on your phone! I’ll be at the gallery from 1pm to 6pm from April 8th through the 11th. Book your adventure at /23kykpaa Bring others or come solo. Also, my show has been extended to May 2, with a brief intermission from April 14-16 for an essential pop-up exhibition in the gallery.
