From Sketch to Skin: Itsekiri, Yoruba, and Hausa

The Look
For this look, I drew from her Itsekiri background. Sketching the original idea was interesting, as her personal style is simple and classy. It’s a great thing I get to infuse my storm in bits to her personal style. Wrapper? Yes, but please not too demure and not too loud, either. Marrying both was the decision to create the single hip cutout. Risky. That, I love.
The Wrapper.
Her status symbol green & gold-trimmed George wrapper is a great choice. Handed down to her two generations down, it carries with it a lot of love and inherent culture. In a flattering gender-fluid way (Itsekiri men tie loose wrappers), it is tied and neatly tacked on her body and the corset. It features bead clusters in the folds.
The Corset.
It is intricately beaded in an intentional mix of pearls, green & royal blue sand beads, with the royal blue meant to stand out. Cinched and high at the displayed hip, it leads us right to her neck pieces and bracelets.
Glass beads.
This is for revered rich old culture. Gbubemi, although Itsekiri, has grown up in Lagos. Yoruba culture is a part of her. Glass bead production is said to date back to Ile-Ife in the first millennium AD. They are “powerful symbols of cultural identity, status, and history, particularly within the Yoruba culture”. She is not just wearing beads, she’s wearing power, wealth, and status. Royal blue, emerald green, and gold-stained beads are the colours in play.
A pebble-bejewelled gold clutch, and matching gold pointy toes heels accessorize the look. Her bronzed-up skin, oiled in Lorusa Khumra oud scented oil, made and loved by the Hausa people, is happy to be clad in the most complimentary skin tone colour shades, wrapping up the look.
