The light in my apt was hitting just right so I was inspired to write.
The first ābookā I ever remember reading on my own was a screenplay. I was 5, maybe 6, and the library was sometimes my babysitter. I roamed the shelves, staring at the spines, and I came across a title I could read with my limited vocabulary. And I was drawn to it, because I was in search of answers to a world that was already too damn brutal. āDo the Right Thingā, A Spike Lee Joint. I couldnāt understand every word then, but I pored over them anyway, along with the sketches, and it changed me. Because it made me feel seen.
It shifted, confirmed, and constructed something in me. Right time, right placeā¦and always has been every time Iāve revisted it over the past 35 or so years. And it means something different, yet all the same, all over again every single time.
Iām unsure why I donāt read more screenplays, maybe because thereās just too much content out there. But I love them. I finally dove back in and bought one for the latest film to open me wide up, Past Lives. Just like I love a singer/songwriter, I deeply appreciate the writer/director. They give all of themselves to us in their creations, and itās the greatest gift.
@helloellephanta is a force.
@a24 thanks for making something that lives on screen, streamed from the cloud, in my mind, in my heart, into an artifact I can hold, care for, and take my time with. So I can visit with again, at the right time and right place, which is every time Iāll pick it up.
PS. Using Stay by Cat Power for the trailer was a goddamn cheat code andā¦I love you New York. See you soon.
