Time to unpack
Much like the entire Student Union movement this video came together in true organic fashion. I probably hadnât been shooting for more than a few months when we did this but all of that pure creative energy coupled with supreme motivation to showcase the lyrical mastery of Najee had me feeling like a seasoned vet.
I will say the only âplannedâ shots were the takes we did around Lil Five Points. We chose here as the main stomping grounds for the visual with the intention of capturing Naj in a well-known eclectic ATL area in effort to get him even more connected to the city that he established as his home base. We hopped out the car and I just started rolling the camera. Of course the âBoothâ was naturally the first spot he gravitated to .. and after being kicked out of there by the security officer returning to his post we kept the adventure going around Lil 5 with the camera still rolling. The fit (sponsored by the homies at Bravada and ZeMovement ) was vibrant and animated so we tried to play on that with the back drops ..
The scene where Naj is walking downtown - we had just came out of a meeting with OG Chubb Rock at the popular HOT 1079 radio station to lock down a gig and being hyped up with adrenaline from the progress we were achieving I just rolled the camera as we walked out the building. Yall already know Naj was camera ready to drop bars at all times so there was no extra convincing needed lol. Unaware at time of things like proper shot-blocking or the need for coverage shots or any of the most commonly used filmmaking techniques..we just went with it and other than backing into a few people (because of course I had no PA to guide me nor did I pre-route some sort of path lol) it completely worked for what we were trying to capture in that moment.
Random but witty , creative and chaotic , humble but confident, honest and raw. Its an honor to have had the opportunity to film a King đ
