WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT: Junk Nails
Rachel Eckenrode brings her contemporary and boundary pushing approach to the ancient art of nail decoration to SHED, offering a technical workshop on methods and materials of nail ornamentation. Her practice of image making and surface decoration sits between vernacular material culture and highly skilled craft, conceiving miniature, ephemeral works of art directly attached to the body—socially engaged forms that move seamlessly between intimate and exposed conditions of public and private space. “Junk Nails” treat the nail as a small-scale sculptural surface, assembling tiny found objects into dense, low-relief ornament. The workshop functions as a master class for both nail technicians, artists and hobbyists interested in applying these surface finishing techniques to other areas of work.
For this program, Eckenrode’s work is presented alongside Akeylah Wellington’s beaded sculpture—built from vernacular materials like sequins and pony beads but shaped through highly technical, precise systems of making. Both artists consider ornament as an expression of beauty, material transformation, and cultural expression.
