With the team hard at work setting up Nabala Cafe, there’s no better time to share background on the concept!
People have been asking the meaning of “Nabala”—it refers to Bayt Nabala, a village in Palestine that was stolen and destroyed in 1948. All of the nearly 3,000 inhabitants were displaced, making them just a small fraction of the 750,000+ people from hundreds of villages whose lives were turned upside down by the Nakba of 1948.
Many people left proactively after hearing about vicious massacres in villages like Deir Yassin. Others were forcibly removed when the village was ultimately invaded. In the end, every single building except the old school was destroyed.
These are photos of present day Bayt Nabala, taken nearly a decade ago. Today, Nabalis are spread out all across the world with many living right here in Chicago.
