Finally, after months of conceptualizing, discussing, and writing (a lot), we’re thrilled to bring you this new #Malaffat Dossier. ✨
“Cinema of the Global South – Reflections on Zawya’s Film Programmers’ Meeting” is a special bilingual publication born from a live event of the same name that took place at @zawyacinema last June. Over three days, filmmakers, programmers, and researchers from across the Global South gathered in Cairo to reflect on programming practices and the role of cinema in shaping shared cultural memory.
It was a generative meeting, one which refused to end. Conversations spilled over. Friendships began. And the need to extend the room beyond June, beyond Cairo became its own call.
So Dossier 5 became an afterword, a continuation, and an opening all at once. It gathers reflections from four contributors who were inside that room (@nouayda , @bungasiagian , @ifdal.e , and @decuir_international ), edited by @nouursafouury and @alia_yman who also curated the event itself.
We will delve into each contribution here over the coming weeks, but the full dossier is already available to read on Malaffat (link in bio). As part of this community, you also carry this conversation forward, and we would love to read your own reflections in the comments!
Closing Dossier 5, Greg de Cuir Jr. didn’t contribute with a classic essay, but an archive-in-progress: The “Programmers Index” — in collaboration with @alia_yman & @nouursafouury ❤️🔥
It is a living map of programmers working in and from the Global South, compiled through a survey sent to those we wished we could have invited to the meeting but–due to travel and visa restrictions–couldn’t.
It is not comprehensive by any means; rather, it is a guide for what could one day become a (virtual) network.
Partial, deliberate, and intentionally unfinished, it stands as an open invitation to add, correct, and expand. 💥

Glimpses from last week’s workshop „Rewriting the Self – Cinema as a Laboratory of Becoming“ 💛
The journey took participants from virtual introductions to the vibrant screenings of the 17th edition of ALFILM, and finally to an intensive two-day workshop at @naasnetwork ’s office in Berlin.
Under the guidance of mentors @iskandar.abdalla , @aboud.alqalaq , and @myhosam , participants were supplied with tools to engage with films critically rather than watching them passively, exploring cinema as a historical document and an instrument for self-liberation.
During the in-person sessions, the group reflected on their festival experiences, shared first drafts, and received direct feedback. Mentors also brought books and film clips to read together, delving into the theoretical frameworks of film criticism and creative writing.
With these new tools and insights, participants are now crafting their final pieces to be published on Malaffat. ✍️ Keep an eye out!
لمحات من ورشة عمل „السينما كمختبر للذات والتاريخ“ 💛
رحلة بدأت بلقاء افتراضي، ومرت بعروض الدورة السابعة عشرة من مهرجان @alfilmberlin ، وصولاً إلى ورشة عمل مكثفة لمدة يومين في مكتب شبكة „ناس“ @naasnetwork في برلين.
تحت إشراف المشرفين @iskandar.abdalla و @aboud.alqalaq و @myhosam ، اكتسب المشاركون/ات أدوات نقدية مكنتهم من التفاعل مع الأفلام، واستكشاف السينما كوثيقة تاريخية وأداة للتحرر الذاتي.
خلال الجلسات الحضورية، أتيحت للمشاركين فرصة التفكير الجماعي، ومشاركة المسودات الأولى وتلقي ملاحظات مباشرة. كما تضمنت الورشة قراءات في كتب ومقاطع سينمائية مختارة لتعميق الفهم بالمناهج النظرية للنقد السينمائي والكتابة الإبداعية.

As imperialist powers continue escalating their aggression on our people, we’ve been hesitant to promote our latest Malaffat dossier. Our network spans over Sudan, Palestine, and Lebanon, so we’re no strangers to the ineffable grief that makes everything else seem trivial.
And while exhaustion and extensive periods of stillness are valid, even necessary consequences in the face of the unrelenting depravity we are witnessing, we refuse to surrender to permanent despair and erasure.
So, despite the painful absurdity of our current reality, we resume our work.
Ifdal Elsaket’s piece comes as a reminder that even under conditions of imperial violence, filmmakers and cultural workers across the Global South have historically forged enduring networks of exchange and solidarity.
Today, we highlight this powerful contribution to dossier 5, which maps out the rich history of South-South film circulation, dating back to the 1950s.
Elsaket demonstrates how these routes were traveled by filmmakers and programmers decades before our Global South Meeting at @zawyacinema , exploring why they were paved over, and what it would take to keep the road open this time.

This week’s highlight from Malaffat’s dossier 5 ✨
As if building on @nouayda ’s question that we shared recently, “Is there still a world to be won?”, @bungasiagian offers a reframe: “The world is not just ours to win—it is ours to build.”
She pulls us back to the third Afro-Asian Film Festival, held in Jakarta in 1964, reminding us that world-building is slow, patient work. That boycotts are not just moral positions but organizational tactics. And that decolonization, when it is more than a metaphor, addresses concrete conditions and enables material transformation.

This text was commissioned and written before the current unfolding of events. And as the region navigates another wave of relentless violence, grief, and –obligatory– resilience, the questions Nour poses take on a sharper, though more painful, urgency.
She traces how the certainties of the #Bandung era have given way to uncertainty today, reflecting on what it means to organize under late capitalism, where alternatives are often reabsorbed as commodities.
The contribution also invites us to think about terminologies, about the possibilities and the dangers of defining an “us” and a “them”, sitting with the tension of finding collective ground in an ever more fragmented world.

The panel will address how Palestinian filmmakers navigate funding limitations and develop alternative production models in the absence of stable national funding systems. Major international distribution companies, driven by commercial logic and market metrics, often remain inaccessible to Palestinian films. In response, independent distributors (Mec Film), initiatives such as NAAS, and Palestinian film festivals worldwide have become essential alternative circuits, allowing films to circulate, reach audiences, and remain visible.
This panel discussion be moderated by Fadi AbuNe’meh PhD candidate in Film and Moving Image Studies at Concordia University in Montreal. The discussion will take place between Irit Neidhardt (author, curator, scholar and founder of Mec Film), Hanna Atallah (Filmlab Palestine founder and artistic director, online), with NAAS (Network of Arab Alternative Screens), May Odeh (director, producer and board member of Palestine Film Institute, online), Munir Atalla (Head of production & acquisitions at Watermelon Pictures, online), Fida Al Jounaidi (Festival Ciné-Palestine Paris, online), with Bristol Palestine Film Festival (online), with Nazra Palestine Short Film Festival (online).
