#OnThisDay in 1944, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) was established.
Founded by leaders including Frederick D. Patterson and Mary McLeod Bethune, UNCF was created to support Black students and strengthen historically Black colleges and universities.
Today, it remains the nation’s largest private scholarship provider for minority students, awarding tens of millions of dollars annually.
UNCF has supported tens of thousands of students, many of whom are the first in their families to attend college. Its work has expanded access to education and created pathways to opportunity for generations.
