I realized I never shared this experience with y’all—so let’s get to it!!
First, it cannot be said enough how valuable it is to have people with vision and dedication making these spaces exist. Bringing people together with intention, so we can all share in wonder. I so appreciate @meh.adjacent@tamalfahal@fatimasque of @we.are.amana for sharing their love and labor with us all!!!
Working with @na_der@squaredcucumber@abdulrahman.musicara even so briefly and seeing them bring their experiences and tastes was soo delightful for me :) and then especially connecting with artists so deeply in touch with Arabic and regional music has been exciting in ways that I can’t help but think of possibilities 😋
When I was invited in, my curiosities were piQUING as for the last year and a half this has been a topic sitting with me, showing up in my ideas and in what I experiment with and what I listen to. The topics of my cultural background in my work has naturally been inquired about and I have my thoughts for sure and I hope to share what I have learned and what it means to me when the time comes but for now what an absolute pleasure it has been to be a part of this inquiry!!!! To watch it evolve, be fed, challenged and stretched!!!! Wheeww
Feels so necessary for my journey, and here in these videos particularly, as a solo artist, I did not realise how much I missed performing with people, exchanging energy, practicing presence in a way you would need to collaborate and improvise. Also opening me up to alternative vocal stylings I hadn’t considered (or shied away from). Such wonder in being reminded to let things unfold :))))
Anyways I can go on and on but I leave it for another time :)))))
