At the center of Tyler Postiglione and Nate Garner’s EP “Exercises” is a seven minute improvisation entitled Location 13. The title is literally a reference to the demarcation of ideas that were captured in an hour and a half long session recorded at Thump in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, but in listening to the sprawling and sonically varied collection of songs, it brings to mind the secret room one might find in a video game, or a lone astronaut’s place of refuge on an empty planet. Postiglione and Garner look for moments of unspoken synchronicity and harmony while they improvise and build their EP out from there. It is a work that is exploratory but also clearly well studied. Postiglione has been releasing music under his electronic project “Rektagon” since 2015, and Garner’s background in jazz and improvised music lends itself to the type of world building that is essential to “Exercises”. The pair has been collaborating since 2022, but this EP is the first released documentation of their work.
