“𝟱 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝟮 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝘀”. by J.J. Caruncho
This last week my wife Arielle and I performed “Move On”, from Sondheim’s “Sunday in the Park with George”, on Broadway.
It was meaningful in so many ways.
1) I had announced my return to the theater. 3 days later - we were asked to sing on Broadway.
2) Spectrum: George is 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 on the Asperger’s part of the spectrum, like Me. Anyone on the spectrum recognizes this. To get to play him, on Broadway, during autism acceptance month was incredible.
3) I believe that this was the first time a Latin actor, or an Actor on the spectrum, sang George 𝙤𝙣 𝘽𝙧𝙤𝙖𝙙𝙬𝙖𝙮. We are happy to break glass ceilings of all sizes.
4) It was with Arielle. This song is like her and I.
I’ve been thinking about something recently: Artists are Athletes, but we don’t receive the same training.
Artists talk “stage fright”? Athletes get performance psychologists.
Artists are told that expressing aspiration is bad form.
Athletes are trained that claiming the championship, playing to win, and having good sportsmanship - 𝙖𝙧𝙚 good form.
As a Martial Artist & Athlete: I have a “Mission Success via Preparation” focus.
𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 + 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺?
So Arielle and I prepped like it was the Super Bowl.
- Daily Rehearsals w/ different objectives.
- Visualization of success & dealing with chaos.
- Contingency Training (I.e. “𝗜𝗳 we cannot hear ourselves up there, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 we _____).
And - we got a Team.
@n8hackmann 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗩𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁.
- He made time for us 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘦 traveling internationally to Sing.
- His extraordinary level of expertise, mastery, and depth of experience were a game changer.
@nataliecaruncho 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱:
- Natalie took time, between running
@moulinrougebway rehearsal in the morning & performing in
@buenavistamusical in the evening to offer insight, depth, & to create moments for the audience.
Aim High.
Your Victory is in Your Preparation.
Let’s get to work.
