Tomorrow, May 15
5-7 pm
There are so many projects I get to be a part of, and working on them is always magical. This one feels almost surreal. There was something so natural about this space — the set, the crew, the location — and its familiarity is something I’ll carry with me for a long time.
The story of Woman Land is really close to my heart, and Sumaya feels so familiar to me as an eldest Somali daughter in Minneapolis. I feel so grateful to have been trusted to carry her into the world and share her with the world.
My memories are warm, yet filming in the Minnesota winter was something else entirely. The cold was deep our bones but it felt warm to tell stories about the people I know, the community I grew up in, and the everyday patterns that feel familiar because I live them myself. Being able to bring that to the screen and embody those moments is something l’ll always carry with me.
Woman-Land will have its World Premiere at the Oscar-qualifying Tampere Film Festival this March! So grateful for the team, the women I created with, and this story we get to share 🤍
