M Dougherty (mx.mdougherty / @eye_m_scentient )
M joined the @mythologiststudio team in August of 2023 as an apprentice to @michaelnordstrandperfumer . Their experimental work in scent—which is both brilliant and original—informs a large part of their practise and brings refreshing new perspectives to the work we do, both for clients and special projects. (Their favourite colour is also green, so we were fated to work together!)
In their own words:
'Working with Michael Nordstrand has been a truly transformative experience. Michael’s seemingly infinite, near-encyclopedic knowledge sparks true joy and an insatiable curiosity, while his mentorship nurtures my unique voice as both an artist and person. Constant encouragement to push past limits turns challenges into exciting opportunities for growth and creativity. I have endless gratitude for the inspiration to continually surprise myself and embrace new possibilities in scent and beyond!'

Texture in perfumery is an invisible force that can shape a scent’s presence and our relationship to it.
Often, materials that evoke tactile sensations play primarily upon activation of the Trigeminal Nerve (Cranial Nerve V) but coalesce with smells detected by the Olfactory Nerve (Cranial Nerve I)...this interplay of detection and sensation gives us the unctuousness of lactones, the brittle edge of dry spices, the chill of mint, and the silken hum of musk.
Through texture, a perfume speaks. Each element contributes not just a smell, but a feeling—a sense of dimension that lingers and fixes itself in the mind of the wearer.
Perfumers wield texture like a sculptor, layering contrasts to create tension or harmony and imbue a creation with subtle shadings in an imitation of nature. What perfumes or raw materials evoke a texture for you?

Joey Rosin (@joeyrosin )
Joey joined the @mythologiststudio team in March of 2023 as an apprentice to @michaelnordstrandperfumer . His knowledge of the market and his work ethic seemingly know no bounds, and his perfumery practise has grown in scope and technique in the two short years he has been with the studio. (He's also hilarious, which makes long days go by quickly.)
In his own words:
'My training as a musician is integral to who I am. I work in identical processes when it comes to both making perfume and music. My sonic and olfactive worlds are inextricably tied; the artistic processes are the same across both mediums, only the techniques are different.
It is a joy to study under Michael. His approach is one born from thorough exploration, deep curiosity, and a sense that there truly is no wrong answer. He demands that we adopt a similar mentality.'
When a client tells me they don't like floral notes in perfume, I often pull some of the most uncommon and surprising materials to smell with them: chrysanthemum, erigeron, or osmanthus, for example; but I also pull 'common' extracts like rose, which can be spicy or green with artichoke-like notes, or neroli, which can be woody and humid with anisic facets. One of the driving forces behind these discovery sessions is helping my clients discover a range of materials that surprise and delight them, allowing their projects to expand in scope and creativity alongside their olfactory peregrinations.
