In San Francisco, it’s not a question of if, but when the next major earthquake will strike.
Which is why we’ve upgraded one of SF’s most critical water routes with earthquake-resistant pipes connecting College Hill Reservoir to Zuckerberg San Francisco General (@zsfgcare )—helping ensure water is there when it matters most.
These pipes are built to flex and move with the ground, with a proven track record in major earthquakes. With much of our system over 100 years old, projects like this keep San Francisco ready for generations to come. 💧

At 5:12 a.m. on April 18, 1906, a 7.9 earthquake struck San Francisco. The shaking lasted less than a minute, but the fires that followed burned for four days.
With little water available at the time, the city faced devastating losses. But that moment led to action: the creation of a dedicated high-pressure water system just for fighting fires - the Emergency Firefighting Water System. 🚒
We’re still building on that legacy today. We are expanding the system on the west side, bringing new pipelines, pump stations, and hydrants to strengthen our city’s resilience. The Next phase starts in 2027, bringing high-pressure water to southwestern neighborhoods and tapping into 1.7 billion gallons from Lake Merced. 💧
Investing in infrastructure today means a safer, stronger city tomorrow. 🛠️

Every day, we’re working behind the scenes to keep our communities running. 👷
We deliver high-quality drinking water to over 2.7 million people, generate clean power for City facilities and @CleanPowerSF customers, and treat wastewater and stormwater to protect our Bay and Ocean. 💧
It’s a big job, and much of our system has been in place for decades. That’s why we’re investing today to modernize our infrastructure and ensure safe, reliable service for generations to come. 🛠️
Because what we build now matters for the future. 🌟

The Social Impact Partnership (SIP) program is about more than giving back—it’s about how we show up for our communities. 🌟 Through voluntary contributions of time and resources, our partners are supporting meaningful programs to help communities thrive from San Francisco to Tuolumne County. We are grateful to work alongside organizations that are committed to making a positive, lasting impact. Because it’s not just what we do, it’s how we do it. #SocialImpact #CommunityImpact #WeAreSFPUC

Watch our video to learn how SFPUC solar projects are powering the city—and why solar energy matters. ⭐
Fun fact: SFPUC has 30 solar projects across San Francisco 👀
You’ll find them on rooftops like City Hall and at many SFUSD schools. 🌱🔋

Last week during SF Climate Week, Secretary @wade.crowfoot had the opportunity to visit Hummingbird Farm, an urban agriculture, food justice and leadership program in the Excelsior District, a project of local organization @poder.sf based on land licensed to the organization by the @mysfpuc .
Thanks so much to PODER and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission for sharing their work and this wonderful space with us!

The Vicente Street sewer looked a lot different in 1909 👀
With parts of our water system nearly 100 years old and parts of our sewer system dating back to the Gold Rush, we are investing in upgrades today to keep everything running strong for our community for generations to come. 💧
