Had always hated the fact that I hadn't seen any of his films. It took a film school parting present in the form of a framed photo of Raj Kapoor (which I judiciously swapped for Guru Dutt) to realize i should catch up.
Awaara hits many traditional melodramatic hindi film spots while maintaining grace, watching the man play a self pitying vagabond was fantastic and I could see Nargis and Raj Kapoor endlessly. With the class dynamics of new India playing out on high contrast black and white in all its raging glory (subtlety be damned!) the film was a very entertaining watch. Also learnt from letterboxd that it's Mao Zedongs favorite film!

I guess one could call them grabs from the screen. Jugnuma is a modern day fairytale wrapped in cozy and haunting notes of storytelling in the best way possible. Catch it at a theater near you.

Can't recommend this enough. Can't explain it either. Like an action-comedy-satirical take on Indians and their culture.... definitely has that foreign gaze acting for it. Not sure if it's a bad thing..amazing performances by Radhika Apte and Ashok Pathak. Marionette-ish actions with a killer soundtrack and strangely comforting framing choices.

A masterpiece in verite. Left Bank really made a difference in how we understand labor during the times post the French Algerian war. A stunning watch I'd recommend everyone.
