🌈 Happy birthday to Lyman Frank Baum, born on this day in 1856! Over 120 years later, we’re still following that yellow brick road. Baum gave us The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and reminded us that the things we search for — mindfulness, heart, courage, and a way home — were with us all along. He had the support of his wonderful wife, Maud Gage, and his powerhouse mother-in-law, Matilda Gage. To celebrate his life, I’m launching Dorothy in Oz on Kickstarter on September 1st — commemorating the anniversary of the original. 🎨 This adaptation has many of Frank’s words—with edits/additions curated with care regarding his biographical accounts. (I think I heard him whispering in my ear all the way from Oz during the rewriting process...) One of my favorite things to draw….maps! Sneak peek of my map that will be in Dorothy in Oz….I love the planning and design involved with the story and layout of land. I remember the first map I ever made as a demonstration and it really catapulted my stories and how they were organized in my mind and writing. Oz has had MANY maps created by MANY illustrators over the years…so I had to take my opportunity. OZ is often SQUARE and looks a little ‘flag’ like in its symmetry—I went a little unsymmetrical to fit the chaos and imbalance thru the journey. For folks who only know the movie, the original book is VERY different. For those who know the original book—Mine is a little different 🌈💚in all the best Baum ways he’d approve.
