One of the biggest mistakes people make with loose-leash walking is relying on the leash before teaching the actual skill. If a dog spends the beginning of training constantly pulling against tension, they’re literally practicing pulling. Instead, I want dogs learning that staying near their human, checking in, and moving together predicts good things. The leash should start as a safety tool, not a steering wheel. Build engagement first, Touch, 1-2-3, reinforcement by wanting to stay near you, check-ins, movement together then add leash mechanics later. The goal isn’t “avoid leash pressure.” The goal is: “being close to my human is awesome.” 🐾

Meet Chloe @chloekobbe_ She’s tougher than the rest…and to be honest when she came into the studio I had expected her to be significantly more frightened & skittish. She’s beautiful, curious & cautious. Her momma @reikobbe is just the best. I could see the love she had in her eyes for Chloe & was soooo wanting to learn.
At one point in the session Chloe came up to sniff me & she said that she had never done that before to anyone especially a man. Reilly didn’t know it but I holding back my tears of happiness. Keep at it guys, so so proud of the both of you!

Loose leash walking starts without a leash. A leash can make dogs feel trapped and turn into just another distraction, so first I teach them to target, touch, turn, and respond to ‘let’s go’ with me. I want my dog to really see me as the most valuable thing in the world a partner in crime worth following everywhere.
