Material Innovation Isn’t the Future — It’s Now! At Design Mumbai, the Smart Materials Lab: Materials! Do Touch!, curated by British designer @chrislefteridesign , invited visitors to explore sustainability in its most tactile, surprising form. From PEELSPHERE, a circular material made from fruit waste, to plant-based leather from tomatoes, Panda Poop Seed Paper, and other cutting-edge innovations from @covestro and @mycelinc , the showcase transformed waste into possibility and curiosity into conversation. Supported by @royalenfield , the lab continues its commitment to meaningful design engagement. After introducing the Himalayan Knot in 2024, 2025 saw the lab champion materials that provoke, inspire, and redefine what design can be. As the conversation around sustainable design grows, we can’t wait to explore more ideas that push boundaries at Design Mumbai 2026, 19–22 November.
