This Trans Day of Visibility, I wanted to share a bit of my personal journey & reflect on the harsh reality of being in the community right now.
Jan 2023, I officially came out as nonbinary. I had had "they/she" pronouns for a couple years prior, but after many a session with my therapist- realized the "she" was only there to comfort other people. I didn't want to make others feel bad for misgendering me.
But what about how I feel? How most trans people feel? To be constantly misgendered, put into boxes they don't fit, have their basic rights debated as if their lives were equivalent to a debate of a pizza topping? It's exhausting explaining yourself to people who don't want to begin to understand... that are scared of an experience that isn't their own, that they can't comprehend.
Being in musical theatre is equally tricky as a trans person. From my experience, If you are nonbinary, they expect complete androgyny, which (in my opinion) goes against the whole not-part-of-binary aspect. I was afraid to come out and jeopardize my career. I'm still weary that I will only be seen as a woman, since that was a role I got good at, playing it for so many years. Playing female characters is like drag to me, but will I ever get to play anything else? I'd love to see more directors casting trans people in cis roles and not making it a big deal - seeing how that perspective shifts the story.
Theatre roles aside, trans siblings as close as Alberta are having rights taken away overnight. More than ever, trans allies need to not just "see" the community, but use their privilege and voices to speak up for them.
Visibility without protection, is simply vulnerability.
What are you doing to uplift your trans friends?
Throwback to my first rehearsal in water for NINE for #worldtheatreday 🛀💋 (don't worry, the cord *kinks* were worked out)
Carla was a big challenge for me, and one of the most wonderful shoes (thigh high boots) i've stepped into.
@alexandra.n.herzog , Erin Puttee, and the dearly missed Patrick Burrwell, truly helped me find my power in this role and I will forever cherish them & this show immensely.
Theatre helps us connect, grow, find ourselves and meet others with empathy. I am so lucky to have met so many amazing people and lived many lives thanks to it!
Thank you, theatre ⭐️

lazy late night practice sesh 🌌
when i’m singing for fun the singer/songwriter hands really come out 🌚
focuses:
• breath support (!!!)
• dynamics
• clarity in lower notes
yay to singing for fun and being perfectly imperfect!🪄
little kay would be very happy we can hit those notes now :)
breath support… we’ll talk… 🤠
when i heard my music theatre program was being shut down, i was devastated. when the world is falling apart, art is the first thing we defund and yet also the first place we turn to for solace?
i wouldn’t be where i am today without the training i had by my wonderful professors at St. Lawrence College. all this to say; invest in artists, and #fundthearts ‼️

sharing this recent self tape cus we could really use cool today! ❄️
this was NOT for frozen (i’m obviously an anna…) but was in the recommended to contrast my belt song for a winter special!
pre-recording goals: work on lower range, realizations in the moment, softer/speechy sound for chorus, clear moment before & after
next time: deeper tone / less forward (especially at beginning - less pop!), more support for higher notes (so easy for belting… not so easy for softer mix!) & don’t lift chin up so they don’t miss expression!
what a lovely 11 days of the @cdntulipfest with these wonderful actors!🪱 thank you to all the friends who came by to say hi! being around my favourite flower 10 hours a day with some cool folks… what more can one ask for? 🌷✨
