When
@ryr0ba reached out to me with interest in booking a photoshoot for their son,
@naothekid as a HS graduation gift, Ryann mentioned how it was important to them to find a photographer who could match their son's artsy and eclectic style. I was honored to hear that my name had come up a lot when they asked for recommendations for a photographer in an RVA #Queer Parents FB page (thank you community)! When we went back and forth on what was important to Nao in this session, I knew that I wanted to take time to connect with Nao before we dove into action taking photos. Nao and I sipped on some lattes (they're my specialty) in my home studio, and talked to one another for a bit getting to know each another. I showed him photos of me in my early emo days from HS, we talked about empathy and fashion, and I found that we related to one another in some really beautiful ways.
With this connection and trust priming the session, we went into taking photos. Nao and I were both so thrilled when we looked through the thumbnails of our photos on my camera screen as we took them - we knew we were capturing him in an authentic way, and that's something that takes skill, care, and empathy to achieve. I'm proud to say that that's the person I am. I care, a lot, and it's always most important to me that we capture photos that reflect your true self.
Thank you to both
@naothekid and
@ryr0ba for giving me the opportunity to capture these photos, and to gain the connection to two amazing human beings out here in RVA.
Lastly, use this as a reminder that photography can be more than a gift. It can be a moment to see your authentic self documented by someone who cares, a lot.
