MWBA is working with Bellfree Contractors and the USFS to stabilize and widen the tread on a lower section of the Sunset Ridge Trail. This section of trail is narrow and prone to washing out. This work should decrease future wash outs and make the tread more comfortable for all trail users.
This work will continue for the next few weeks. Please slow down and use extra caution while navigating the trail.
TREAD WORKED! 💪
26 volunteers of all ages and backgrounds made it up over the damn for a day of tremendous progress. We debenched, cleared tons of overgrowth, handled a slide and did a SURPRISE new project that you'll have to go read all about on our full recap post on our website. 👻

A small but mighty crew of 6 forged through the deep creek crossings of the Lower Gabrielino and up over the dam last weekend. 🚣
Our ultimate goal is to get over into the wash and reconstruct a washed away section of the Gabrielino. So in preparation to move volunteers up trail we got to brushing the switchbacks and benching to allow users to stay away from the edge. 🔀
Arroyo Seco? More like Arroyo Mojado ;) 💦

Since first building it in the 90's, MWBA has continued to steward Ken Burton Memorial Trail. February, with the help of 16 amazing volunteers, we have finished brushing the trail from top to bottom. 😎
After pedaling 7 miles up the steep road, we ✂️ whitethorn and prickly scrub oak brushing the top three switchbacks. Thanks to the dedication of our ardent and capable volunteers, the trail is currently brushed top-to-bottom and is running as good as the day it was restored!

FEBRUARY 💘 VOLUNTEER DAY:
We're gonna' continue to show our love for this trail! It's running great but could use a little tune up. 🎵 Our focus will be on general brushing.
Volunteers will head out from JPL on Sunday, Feb 15th up to the Upper Brown Mountain Saddle and down to the Memorial. This is a bike-in only day due to distance. 🚵 Riders should be able to climb 2,000 feet over 6 miles - followed by the epic descent we all love and know after provided lunch on the trail to return home.🥪

First of the Year! 🎉
Our Saturday volunteers climbed a mountain before moving mountains (of dirt). 15 amazing people came out to help us restore trail on the Echo Mountain Connector. We debermed, rebuilt drains, cleared slides, and did overall tread maintenance. ⚒️ We hope this trail will reopen soon, but for now it remains closed. 🚷
Beyond that - 4 of our certified MWBA sawyers made it out to Upper Gabrielino to clear the trail between Red Box and Switzer of fallen trees. Thanks to our friends at @lowelifesrcc who cleared Colby Canyon this weekend, we’ve collectively gotten the whole Strawberry Loop running flush. 🍓

MWBA always appreciates reports of downed trees and other trail mishaps on the trails we steward. When you're out enjoying the trails and come across an issue, take a picture of it and note where you are on the trail. Then just shoot us an email ([email protected]) and/or hit us up on FB or IG when you're back in range. We'll get on it ASAP! 📱
WHAT ARE YOU DOING THIS WEEKEND⁉️
Head up to Mt Lowe Railway Connector with us for our first volunteer day of 2026. We got a good start on this trail at the end of last year and will start making our way up to Middle Sam Merrill. Benching, tread work, drain restoration, and general fire restoration are all in the cards for the day. We'll supply the tools, just pick your favorite one! 🚂
We will be rendezvousing (thats Fringlish) at the Cape of Good Hope at 8:30am which is just shy of 3 miles up - so chose to access our work site by bike or boot. 🥾🚴
