What happens when the American Dream becomes a place? 🇺🇸
This week, our #AIAArtistFeature is Marco Waldis (@mwaldis ), whose ongoing project “Where The West Ends” explores life in Forks, Washington, a remote town where the mythology of the American West still feels strangely alive.
Set against dense forests, open roads, and the edge of the Pacific Northwest, Waldis’s images trace a community shaped by self-reliance, tradition, and a deep relationship to the land. Forks appears suspended in time: a place where people continue to build, repair, hunt, gather, and imagine themselves through ideals often associated with an older vision of America.
Rather than approaching the town through nostalgia or critique alone, Waldis observes how these identities are actively maintained through daily gestures, routines, and shared values. His photographs reveal a landscape where the pioneer spirit persists, not as fantasy, but as a lived social reality.
As Waldis reflects, “Apparently in America, the Dream still lives and people still choose to dream it.”

Where the West Ends esplora i confini dell’immaginario statunitense tramite la cittadina di Forks, nel Pacific Northwest — luogo che rappresenta il limite simbolico dell’espansionismo statunitense a ovest e i cui abitanti incarnano tuttora lo spirito della frontiera che da sempre caratterizza l’identità americana. Nato da un periodo di ricerca e dal dialogo con la comunità, il lavoro affronta temi centrali della cultura del paese: l’ingenuity come forma di sopravvivenza, il rapporto con la natura, l’individualismo e la persistenza del Destino Manifesto — quell’idea formulata da O’Sullivan nel 1845 secondo cui gli Stati Uniti erano destinati a “diffondersi attraverso il continente”. Born out of a period of research and close dialogue with the local community, the project addresses central themes of U.S. culture: ingenuity as a means of survival, the relationship with nature, individualism, and the persistence of Manifest Destiny—the idea articulated by O’Sullivan in 1845 that the United States was destined to “spread across the continent.” In Forks, the paradox of the contemporary West emerges through vast landscapes, harsh climatic conditions, and the faces of local inhabitants, revealing the visible traces of a multifaceted America in transition.

Think about the strangeness of today’s situation. Thirty, forty years ago, we were still debating about what the future will be: communist, fascist, capitalist, whatever. Today, nobody even debates these issues. We all silently accept global capitalism is here to stay. On the other hand, we are obsessed with cosmic catastrophes: the whole life on earth disintegrating, because of some virus, because of an asteroid hitting the earth, and so on. So the paradox is, that it’s much easier to imagine the end of all life on earth than a much more modest radical change in capitalism.
