I was very saddened to hear about the passing of the legendary James Gadson. I’m truly grateful to have had the opportunity to share a few stages and spend some time with him some years back when I was performing in my pal Amos Lee’s band. James’ impact on popular music is immeasurable. As one of the most prolific sessions drummers of all time, his unmistakable pocket, timing, dexterity, and deep syncopation were integral to so many classic records. He was the rhythmic cornerstone of two albums that have meant so much to me: Bill Withers’ “Still Bill” and Marvin Gaye’s “I Want You”. I love watching videos of James’ live performances. The sheer joy he brought to the music was infectious. Put on any video of his and you just can’t help but smile.
There’s a collective uneasiness these days that feels inescapable. It’s palpable and ever present. Music is one of the very few things we have that can transcend the madness, even if it’s just for a moment. It can provide healing and clarity when nothing makes sense; when you’re lost, heartbroken, isolated. It’s the distinctly human experience of being in a shared space and connecting to one another through that beautiful exchange of energy and vibrations.
It’s been a difficult past few years. There are many days I feel completely overcome with grief. If you’ve lost someone you love, you know that feeling all too well. In my experience, songs are often the only true antidote to alleviate that unbearable sadness. I hope to see some of your lovely faces at a show this year and, no matter where you are, if you’re struggling, just know that you’re not alone.

🎙️ MUTLU (pronounced moot’-lu) is a first-generation American born Turkish musician from Philadelphia who proudly carries a torch for the city’s soul legacy. He played in area clubs, open mics and practiced innumerable hours writing songs before landing his first tour opening for Joe Jackson! Since that pivotol moment, he’s toured across the U.S. and Europe with his musical brother, Amos Lee, who discovered Mutlu’s music just as both of their careers were taking off. In addition he’s found an advocate with Daryl Hall & John Oates, who invited Mutlu to support a national theater tour (and the collaboration you’re listening to—say what?!🎧). @mutlusounds

It’s hard to believe that it’s been sixteen years since the great T-Bone Wolk passed away. He possessed an extraordinary gift as a musician and he shared that gift with such an inspiring sense of generosity and humility. He elevated every situation he stepped into. I learned so much from him and I feel immense gratitude to have called him a friend.
