Exclusively for the talented students of Brolic Army DJ School, contestants are challenged to compose a 90-second beat-juggling routine to “Change The Game” (Jay Z), inspired by the legendary Roc Raida. Judging Criteria Technicality: What is the overall quality of the routine? Presentation: Was the composition created in a tasteful and structured manner? Originality: How inventive are the beat juggle patterns applied to the song? The top 3 DJs will be selected based on these criteria. Scoring Scale: Very Poor = 1 Poor = 2 Mediocre = 3 Good = 4 Very Good = 5 Outstanding = 6 Scores for @mutemind_ = 38.5 Judge: Rob Swift Technicality: 4 Presentation: 4 Originality: 4 Total: 12 This was a good routine. Particularly when you consider Mute juggled words just as effectively as drum beats. Over the years, Mute has competed in many of our Brolic Army challenges, and this is definitely his best performance. 🔊 DO THIS: Ten years ago, a group of likeminded producers merging alt-electronic and left-field hip-hop beats came together to form @therabbitholelv , inspired by the then-burgeoning scene in LA. It wasn’t mainstream, but they knew they weren’t the only ones in the city searching for something different. Co-founders Lucas Ybarra (@lowkeylukey ), Ty Bolden (@mayne.frame ) and Jamaal Long (@mutemind_ ) had minimal expectations when they threw their first show at Scullery (now @oddfellowsvegas ) but people showed up, and kept showing up as they stretched to Bunkhouse and other venues. “The feedback from those early shows was solid—it felt like an IYKYK kind of thing, and honestly, it still does. You either get it right away, or you stick around, vibe out, and discover something new,” Lucas says. “But one thing’s for sure—it brought something fresh to Vegas.” Soon, they were adding to their roster with artists like @lothedino , @itsmonro and @weirddough and rocking Life is Beautiful, hosting after parties for Flying Lotus and taking THR on the road. A decade in, THR is still digging deep into those sounds as they celebrate 10 years this Saturday at @swandivelv . It’ll be a “full-on buffet of sound for everyone” with THR members serving hip-hop, bass, neo-house and more, with special guests like audiovisual artist @brettbolton and groovy Vegas outfit @overnightcelebrityband . It’s the culmination of everything they’ve built over the past 10 years, which saw the crew rise to ubiquity in DTLV—until COVID forced them to pivot online. “Post-COVID, most of our go-to venues had shut down, making it tough to bring back the live experience,” Lucas say. “Now, we’ve finally found a new home at Swan Dive where we’ve been curating the high-quality shows we’ve always envisioned.” But the 10-year anniversary is also bittersweet: it’s their last live event for now “We’re shifting our focus to online efforts, including our TRH Mix Series,” he says. “The live experience has been everything to us, but we feel it’s time to step away and explore new avenues for growth and success.” 📆: Feb. 22, 9pm 📍: 1301 S.
