In their oil paintings and ballpoint pen drawings, Robin Wen (1994) and Bobbi Essers (2000) each depict, in their own way, their generation’s desire for freedom. Their work takes us from languid evenings with friends to parties that continue until the early hours. With great technical skill, both artists create hushed, cinematic snapshots. By carefully choosing what they show – and, just as importantly, what they leave out – their images say more than they reveal. In a time when images follow one another at a relentless pace, Wen (@robin.wen.be ) and Essers (@bobbiessers ) slow the gaze. They make visible the fleeting nature of their generation’s lives, allowing it simply to exist in all its vulnerability, intensity and beauty. 𝗙𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝗟𝗲𝗻𝗴 & 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗲 | 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗰 𝗟𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 November 22, 2025 – June 28, 2026, Ruurlo Castle This autumn, Museum MORE at Kasteel Ruurlo presents the enchanting exhibition 𝘍𝘰𝘯𝘨-𝘓𝘦𝘯𝘨 & 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘦 | 𝘊𝘩𝘪𝘤 𝘓𝘦 𝘍𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘬. Step into the flamboyant 1970s and explore the iconic collaboration between fashion artist Fong-Leng and her muse, Mathilde Willink. 👗 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁: • Unique, sculptural creations by Fong-Leng — including her famous gowns and coats adorned with exotic animal and floral appliqués. • Denim designs created by Fong-Leng for Levi’s, showcasing her versatility as a designer. • Striking photography by Ferry van der Nat, revealing how contemporary Fong-Leng’s fashion remains today. • The monumental portrait of Mathilde Willink, painted by Carel Willink, in which she wears a silver leopard-print coat designed by Fong-Leng. This autumn, @museumjan_amstelveen also presents an exhibition devoted to Fong-Leng (15 October 2025 – 6 April 2026). It highlights her influence as a colourful and multidisciplinary fashion designer – and how her work continues to inspire young creators to this day. Fashion icon Mathilde Willink once tried her hand at tap dancing and may have shone a little less brightly than expected... 👠 Together with Fong-Leng and a group of Dutch celebrities, she took tap dance lessons. In practice, though, keeping the rhythm proved far more challenging than anticipated. At one point, shoes were quite literally flying across the room. A lavish creation by Fong-Leng completes the scene. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗼𝗻: 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗼𝗽 & 𝗣𝘆𝗸𝗲 𝗞𝗼𝗰𝗵 | 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 21 June – 25 October 2026 | Gorssel In the Netherlands, Charley Toorop (1891–1955) and Pyke Koch (1901–1991) are regarded as two of the most important figurative painters of the twentieth century – perhaps the most important. 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘦𝘺 𝘛𝘰𝘰𝘳𝘰𝘱 & 𝘗𝘺𝘬𝘦 𝘒𝘰𝘤𝘩 | 𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘳 𝘕𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 is the first exhibition to bring together the work of these two distinctive artistic personalities. Their significant oeuvres reveal clear parallels, and their lives and loves intersected on numerous occasions. Two men haul a boat along the water. The ropes cut into their shoulders, muscles braced beneath the strain. Cagnaccio di San Pietro rendered their bodies with icy analytical precision: no romanticism of hard labour, only the body under tension. That is the paradox of this work: it depicts movement, yet breathes silence. In this work by 𝗚𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗼 𝗱𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗼, you’re looking at a place that feels instantly familiar: an Italian square with arcades, a building in the distance, and a fountain. But the longer you look, the stranger it becomes. Where are the people? Why does it feel so still, almost unsettling? 👀 De Chirico is known for his mysterious, deserted cityscapes. With sharp shadows, vivid colours and an almost theatrical composition, he creates a world that hovers between dream and reality. 𝗔 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗲. 𝗔 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝘁. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲. But in the hands of Domenico Gnoli, something ordinary turns into something else entirely. He zooms in so far on an object that it almost loses its function. What’s left is pattern, surface, texture. Suddenly, you’re no longer just looking at a shoe or a coat, but at something you recognise and can’t quite place at the same time. In the late 1960s, Gnoli makes a radical choice to focus on detail alone. No story, no figures, no distractions. Just the object itself, observed down to the millimetre. “𝘐 𝘪𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘵,” he once said. And something interesting happens because of that: the closer you look, the further away it seems. 𝘓𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘴’𝘴 𝘚𝘩𝘰𝘦 and 𝘊𝘰𝘢𝘵 (both 1968) are on view until 7 June in 𝗠𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗼!
