True stories told by everyday transit riders. Podcasts, live storytelling, pop-up events, and more! Unaffiliated with any transit agency. Say hi đđ!
Last month Muni Diaries turned 18 and we celebrated with stories of âGrowing with Muniâ đĽš. Our Haiku Champion got a cap and gown and Muni Diaries founder, Tara Ramroop, became Muni Diaries Valedictorian and earned her Doctor of Muni degree (a very prestigious honor)! In her Valedictorian speech she shared,
âThis valedictorian speech isnât a farewell, but rather an invitation to keep going. To remember that you do have a story to tell, yes, youâeveryone does. To keep riding the bus and demanding a public transit system worthy of this Victorian city and its cast of characters. Itâs your money and itâs the publicâs transit! To remember that sharing space with strangers wonât be the worst thing that can happen to you today. In fact, it could be the best.â
Muni Diaries has grown and changed over the years, but at its core Muni Diaries is always you, the everyday transit riders willing to share your stories. You help show us and each other that we are more connected than we know, more alike than we are different, and forever and always live in the best city in the whole damn world.
Hereâs to many more years of sharing your stories. All aboard!

One day in 2013, Luisa Isbellânewly minted San Franciscan and tech workerâfound herself on the wrong side of a strangerâs crisis on the 19 Polk, and went from enthusiastic bus rider to bus avoider. Trading freedom for safety seemed logical after such a scary encounter, but several years of gloomy commutes and thousands of dollars in parking fines later, something had to give.
Listen to @luisaalana tell her story now on the podcast.

March 18th is Transit Employee Appreciation Day and weâre feeling especially grateful this year as we celebrate 18 years of sharing your transit storiesâso many of them involving a special bus driver, train operator, or other transit employee. To all our Muni operators, station agents, cleaners, mechanics, maintenance workers, and many more: thank you for keeping us moving every day.
Visit our blog for a roundup of stories by and about operators. We hope you love them as much as we do. And remember: always thank your operator.

In honor and memoriam of our friend, Joe Kukura â¤ď¸âđŠš
Thanks for the memories Joe: an absolute gem of a human, performer, writer, and San Franciscan.
Joe joined us at Muni Diaries Live in 2018, pictured here. He told a story and participated, with his signature flair, in our Muni Haiku Battle.
After we invited him to be in the show, he noted that he was at our second MDL in 2009: the creepy, mustachioed coach in a burlesque cheer squad called the Cock-Ts. Ever the method actor, he stayed in character.
We know heâs giving this exact energy in the next plane â¤ď¸
