Nokia Prism Series — Art Direction / Brochure Design
Back in 2007 Nokia launched the Prism Collection, a range of ‘fashion-led’ handsets, and Multistorey were commissioned to design the world-wide sales brochures.
Nokia’s industrial design team cited such diverse inspirations as geometric architecture, faceted jewel-like motifs, and home-made collaged post-punk graphics. We had the idea of building a small triangular box lined with optical quality mirrors, as a stage to bring all these things together.
We wanted the shoot to be as honest as possible — by doing everything in-camera — but to create optical alchemy by turning our poundshop props into infinite sci-fi landscapes when placed within the reflective set. We spent a very fun few days in the studio with photographer Iain Dickens, playing and shooting, adding laser pointers and cigarette smoke to the arrangements of telephone-cable keyrings, highlighter pens, light bulbs and our handmade approximations of the phones’ keypad and screensavers.
The brochure itself was laid out as one long strip and the heavy weight high-gloss pages were french-folded (and printed with solid fluorescent ink on the reverse) to enhance this wrap-around effect. The centre spread of the brochure is folded like a pop-up book along the angular lines of the keypad. The typographic headlines were made from hand cut and folded paper, photographed and overlaid on the geometric images to increase the level of 3-dimensionality.
It was particularly bad timing for Nokia as Apple had just launched the first generation iPhone — I don’t think they sold many of these phones, I only ever saw a handful of them in the wild… But we got a great project out of it. Thanks to Mat and Rob for the commission!

We have a new website! It’s much easier to navigate than the last one, and there's a lot of work on there to navigate through. It’s been more than twenty years since the studio was founded in London and four years since it relocated to Stockholm.
We’re always looking for interesting new work, clients and collaborations, so get in touch and let's talk.

We just designed some simple typographic invitations and posters for the upcoming open studios at WIP (where we are) on October the 24th. There are approximately 100 studios here, with artists, designers, architects and more, so come along and see what everyone has been up to.
It’s the last one at Årstaberg as the building is being demolished next year— but it’s also a celebration as contracts have just been signed on a great new location in Västberga.
I’m not sure what or if we’ll be showing, but whatever happens come and say hello, have a drink in the studio and visit the others!

Waaaay back in the year 2000 we made this press brochure for the autumn / winter collection of George, the fashion range of UK supermarket Asda. Our idea was very simple — to highlight the (usually) mutually exclusive concepts of aspiration and affordability. This was succinctly achieved by overlaying the fashion photography with trompe-l’oeil cashtill receipts, and the juxtaposition of gold foiled dot matrix text highlighted the clothes' cheap prices.
